Marie Claire Kaberamanzi (born 1996) is a Congolese-Zambian nurse and activist for female education. After meeting fellow female education activist Malala Yousafzai, Kaberamanzi began working at the Malala Fund.

Early life, education and career[edit]

Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1996 during the Congolese Civil War, Marie Claire Kaberamanzi was forced to flee with her family to Zambia. Along the journey from the Congo to Zambia, she lost siblings and other family members. In Zambian schools, Kaberamanzi stated that she was bullied and would lie to her mother about going to school and instead would sit on the side of the road all day. In her teenage years, Kaberamanzi's mother was killed and father was severely injured in a home attack in front of Kaberamanzi's eyes.[1]

Following her mother's death, Kaberamanzi began getting an education. After receiving a call that she could start a new life in the United States, Kaberamanzi accepted and moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. At first, she was denied from a high school in Lancaster since she was above high school age. However, she sat down with the head of the school and negotiated a way into the school. After graduating, Kaberamanzi began attending Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Maryland where she studied nursing in 2016.[2][better source needed] She graduated in 2020.[3]

While studying in the United States, Kaberamanzi began telling her story and doing public speaking events. At one event, The Girl Power Trip in Lancaster,[1] she met female education activist Malala Yousafzai. After hearing Kaberamanzi's story, Yousafzai partnered with her on a slew events and opportunities including speaking at the United Nations,[1] writing a book titled We Are Displaced,[1] and working at the Malala Fund where Kaberamanzi continues to work, as well as her nursing position. At the Fund, Kaberamanzi continues to tell her story and works on encouraging female education.
