Rated People is a British online marketplace that connects homeowners with tradespeople for home improvement and maintenance work. Founded in 2005, the company is based in London and operates throughout the United Kingdom.[1]
History
Rated People was founded by Andy Skipworth in 2005 after difficulties with a home improvement project led him to develop an online service for finding tradespeople.[2]
The company raised Series A funding from Frog Capital in 2011 and a £6.5 million pre-IPO round in 2014, co-led by Frog Capital and Western Technology Investment. In 2018, it entered a media-for-equity arrangement with Channel 4 Ventures, and in 2022 a further funding round was led by investor Martin Port.[3][4]
Adrienne Minster, served as chief executive officer from 2020 until 2024, when she was succeeded by Ottokar Rosenberger.[5]
Products and services
Rated People operates a digital marketplace where homeowners post details of jobs and receive quotes from registered tradespeople across trades such as building, roofing, plumbing, electrical work, decorating and gardening. Homeowners do not pay to post jobs, while tradespeople pay to access job leads.[2]
As of recently published data, the platform reports more than 50,000 tradespeople using the service and over one million jobs posted annually.[6]
Growth and investment
By 2013, Rated People reported annual revenues of around £12 million.[7]
In September 2018, the company raised an additional £5.2 million in a round led by Channel 4 Ventures and Downing Ventures to support technology development and sales and marketing activity.[8]
Awards and recognition
Rated People has appeared in Best Companies listings for mid‑sized UK employers and has been referenced by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank in relation to its growth in the online home improvement sector.[6][9]
