ReGenesis are an English Genesis tribute band. They perform mostly material from Genesis's Peter Gabriel era. Formed in 1994, the band have been through several lineup changes, and the latest incarnation comprises founding members Nigel Appleton (drums) and Doug Melbourne (keyboards), along with Tony Patterson (vocals, flute), Tom Janssen (lead guitar) and Nick Loebner (bass and 12-string guitars).

History[edit]

ReGenesis was founded in 1994 by drummer Nigel Appleton, bassist Andy Hyam, and keyboardist Doug Melbourne, along with guitarist Steve Marsh and vocalist Glyn Protheroe. The band performed regularly, including shows at the London Astoria and the O2 Academy Islington, as well as in Belgium and Holland. The repertoire has generally centred on those albums released when Peter Gabriel was in the band.

ReGenesis appeared in Mojo's "Top Ten Tribute Bands" and was also featured briefly in Channel 4's "Top 10 Progressive Rock Bands" in the section devoted to Genesis.

The band's first lineup change came in late 1998 when Glyn Protheroe departed the band to be replaced by Tony Patterson.[1] The lineup then remained stable until the "Lamb for Supper" tour of 2001 when the band was temporarily augmented by second drummer Jamie Fisher. The following year, guitarist Andy Gray replaced Steve Marsh, and keyboardist Doug Melbourne was replaced by Piers de Lavison.[2] In 2005, Fisher briefly rejoined for performances of Seconds Out. In 2005, vocalist Tony Patterson appeared on John Hackett's album Checking Out of London. At the following year's Genesis Convention, Patterson, Gray, and Andy Hyam joined Hackett and his brother Steve on stage. The performance's encore was "The Knife", during which they were joined by Genesis'sTrespass-era drummer John Mayhew.

The band dissolved in 2006 with the departure of Hyam, Patterson, and de Lavison, but were reformed in 2009 with new member Shaun Hunt joining on bass. The band's 2009 performance at the Shepherds Bush Empire was recorded as the live album Live at the Empire; Steve Hackett provided the album's sleeve notes.

The band performed an acclaimed show to a packed Shepherds Bush Empire on 28 November 2009 from which a live album Live at the Empire was produced. The album featured sleeve notes from Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett who had attended the show. After a short hiatus, the band reformed in 2015 with new members Tom Janssen and Nick Loebner on guitar and bass respectively.
