Alice Jemima Shiels (born June 11, 1993) is an English singer-songwriter.[1] After finding a work placement at Glastonbury, Jemima started posting original songs onto her SoundCloud account in January 2011, her first one being an original single called "Ain't It Funny". Her debut extended play All The Boyfriends was released in September 2012.[2]

In July 2013, she released a cover of Blackstreet's "No Diggity", which quickly gained over four million streams on SoundCloud.[3] This brought the attention of Rob Da Bank, the owner of the Sunday Best label, whom later signed her to it. In 2016, she released her second EP Liquorice, which featured the title track and "So".[4]

Jemima's eponymous debut studio album was released in March 2017, which featured the singles "Dodged a Bullet", "Electric", "When You Dnace", "Take Me Back", and her cover of "No Diggity".[5] After a two-year hiatus, she began touring with Sophie Ellis-Bextor on The Song Diaries Tour, as Bextor's opening act. Her second studio album, Everything Changes, was released in February 2020 and spawned several singles, including "Icarus", "Dancing in Love", "Our Love", "Somebody", and the titular song.[6]

Career[edit]

2010—2013: Beginning of career and All The Boyfriends[edit]

Alice started writing songs at the age of 12, and while at comprehensive school in her native Devon, she managed to grab a work placement at Britain's biggest summer festival, Glastonbury. With the job cementing the idea of a music career in her mind, Jemima talked about writing and developing her sound. While at college, she won the Helen Foundation Best Endeavour Award, which saw her get to work with producer Andy Chatterley.[1] She started posting original songs and covers on her SoundCloud account in January 2011. Taking her classical guitar style and melding it with looped beats and subtle electronica, Jemima self-released her EP All The Boyfriends on September 24th 2012, while consistently uploading material to the internet.[2] In 2013, Jemima released her cover of Blackstreet's "No Diggity", which gained over four million streams on SoundCloud.[3]

2014—2018: Sunday Best debut album[edit]

Jemima's covers caught the attention of BBC Radio 1 presenter and label owner Rob Da Bank. After inviting Jemima to record a session at the BBC's Maida Vale studios, Da Bank signed her to his own Sunday Best label.

She released her single "Liquorice" under the label on April 21, 2016, which was the lead single of her EP with the same name.[7][4] Entering the studios with producers Roy Kerr amd Simon Byrt, the singer set about recording her debut album. She released two more singles, those being "Dodged A Bullet" and "Electric" which were released on August 10 and October 26 respectively.[8][9] In January 2017, she re-released her cover of "No Diggity" as an official single on all streaming devices.[10] Her self-titled album, Alice Jemima, was released on March 3 in the same year.[5]

2019—present: Everything Changes[edit]

After a two-year hiatus from music, Jemima released the lead single of her second studio album on April 12, 2019, titled "Icarus".[11] During June, she toured with Sophie Ellis-Bextor on The Song Diaries Tour, as her opening act.[12] On July 19, Jemima announced her second studio album Everything Changes, along with the release of the single "Dancing in Love".[6] The album was originally set to be released on October 18, 2019, but was later pushed back to January 31, 2020, then to its final date on February 28. The album spawned four other singles, which were released prior the album's release, those being "Our Love", "Somebody", "Everything's Changing" and "Serious".[13][14][15][16]
