The Real Estate Council of British Columbia (RECBC) is a regulator in British Columbia responsible for enforcing the licensing and licensee requirements of the Real Estate Services Act.[1]. There are over 25,000 real estate agents licensed in British Columbia.

In 2018, RECBC launched a Licensee Knowledge Base website[2] as an information and resource hub for real estate professionals and managing brokers. In April 2019, RECBC and FINTRAC signed an information-sharing agreement to combat money laundering in the real estate sector[3]

History[edit]

RECBC was established in 1958 by the British Columbian government. On January 1, 2005, the Real Estate Services Act came into effect. In 2018, RECBC became a Crown Agency and published its first government service plan[4]

Education[edit]

Real estate professionals are licensed by RECBC under the Real Estate Services Act. Since 2007, BC Real Estate professionals are required to complete re-licensing educational courses which are administered by The Real Estate Division of the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia[5].The British Columbia Real Estate Association and RECBC signed an agreement in the Summer of 2019, giving RECBC more oversight and direct involvement in regulatory education[6], as stated in the Raising Standards of Regulatory Education White Paper [7] that came out in 2018.

RECBC provides consumer information to the public by giving tips on buying or selling a home, choosing a real estate professional [8], and offering guidance.

Professsional Standards Advisors[edit]

BC real estate professionals and the public who have questions or concerns can contact RECBC's Professional Standards Advisors who offer confidential phone or email services.
