Bakruddin Khalilullah Muhammad known professionally as Really Khalil or Khalil is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. Known for his summery vibes and positive attitude,[2] Khalil has gained recognition for creating a diverse mixture of hip hop, R&B, pop, and dance music. He is the first hip hop artist to issue and sell investing securities to the public through an SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) registered platform.[2] He first gained chart success following the New Year's Day release of his 2021 single, “Supermodel” by way of the iTunes Top 100 Hip Hop/Rap Chart in Turkey, peaking at #72.[3] His stage name is derived from his middle name. The prefix, "Really," refers to his authentic approach to songwriting. “I want people to feel the ‘Real’ in my music.”[2]
On May 18, 2021, Khalil’s debut album Love Matters (2020) was awarded with Best Local Album of 2020 by Connect Savannah, a respected magazine from his hometown.[4] Love Matters was named after the local Love Matters movement started in 2016 by his brother, Ijtihad Muhammad, known professionally as WZRDBLVK.[5] The movement was meant to bring about a positive solution to the polarizing battle between the Black Lives Matter, Blue Lives Matter, and All Lives Matter movements.[6] The brothers showed their version of love for their local community by holding up cardboard signs with heartfelt messages on some of Savannah’s busiest intersections and by sanitizing gas pumps to help flatten the curve of the novel COVID-19 pandemic.[5]
Khalil’s first official music video “Wipe Me Down,” was directed and produced by his girlfriend, Shaunii Rawls. Since then, they have collaborated on “HEATWAVE,” “Supermodel,” and “Do Dat,” landing them on VEVO and Apple Music.
Early life[edit]
Khalil was born in 1990 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] Though he was raised by both of his parents, they still experienced the hardships of a low income household. When Khalil’s family encountered homelessness in his junior year of high school, his mother found ways to soften the blow, partially by finding refuge in the Interfaith Hospitality Network. Khalil recalled, “We stayed in a network of churches every week, and they were very, very nice people. I learned first hand what it looks like to be a good Christian, because I grew up Muslim. Being able to just experience people who don’t look at you and judge you on your faith, or how you grew up, just really want to help, that was an eyeopener to see that there are really good people in the world. Fortunately, when we were homeless then, we didn’t have to sleep on the street, or really face the true desperation and effects of homelessness.” Khalil experienced homelessness again as an adult, but that time he felt the bitterness of a much more desperate situation. His shelter was his Kia Rio.[2]
Career[edit]
Khalil was influenced to begin making by first dancing to it. He and his brother’s hip hop dance crew, Unrated Krew, was his segue into becoming a musician.[2] Unrated Krew was created in 2006 before Khalil’s relocation to Savannah, Georgia, due to his family’s homelessness.[1] Khalil defines the first song he wrote as “terrible.” Nevertheless, the completion of a self-produced and self-written song inspired him to improve and eventually embark on a career as a musical artist.[2]
On April 26, 2021, Khalil announced that he teamed up with SEC registered platform, Music Benefactors, to help his soon to be released album, As a Matter of Fact, go public. There is no official release date for this album. The platform allows fans and music lovers to invest in the album to later receive a share of the royalties after the project has been released.[2]
On May 14, 2021 Carl’s Jr. and Hardees announced a collaboration with OnlyFans to promote their chicken sandwich lineup. They used “Saucy On You,” and “Cheezcake,” two songs from Khalil’s debut EP, Chef’s Specials (2019) to help convey the sensual feeling and edgy messaging in their ads.[7]
