Reba Kanta Mohanta is an Indian Ankia Naat and mask-making artist from Assam. He was the recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2014) for his contribution to the mask-making tradition of Assam.[1][2]

Early life[edit]

Mohanta was born in Khatpar Satra of Sivasagar district in Assam. Mohanta was groomed in the Satra culture of Assam under his father's tutelage, learning the complexities of Sattriya music, dance, Khol playing, and instrument-making, with a particular emphasis on the art of Sattriya mask-making.[1]

Career[edit]

Mohanta has taken part in mask-making workshops and exhibits organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Asom Satra Mahasabha, and Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, and his masks have been acquired for display by prestigious museums such as the Indian Museum, Kolkata, National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., and Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in New Delhi. In the Republic Day Parade of 2003, Mohanta represented the state of Assam. The tableau's theme was based on Assam's mask-making traditions.[1]
