Red, also known as the red bird, is a character created by Finnish game designers Jaakko Iisalo and Thomas Erikoinen. A flagship mascot for the Angry Birds franchise and Finnish video game developer Rovio Entertainment, he first appeared in the 2009 casual puzzle game Angry Birds as one of the available birds that could be used by the player to destroy structures. Unlike other birds in the game, Red initially has no additional abilities and is the first bird that the player can utilize in levels.

Red has appeared in numerous video games, including the original Angry Birds puzzle games, the 2013 kart-racer Angry Birds Go!, and the 2014 role-playing game Angry Birds Epic. In addition, the character has appeared in several crossover titles with other franchises such as Star Wars, Transformers, and Rio. In the original game, Red is a cardinal who is depicted with a round limbless body. However, in recent installments, the character has been portrayed as anthropomorphic with small limbs for his wings and feet. Outside of games, Red has appeared in animation, theme park attractions, and merchandise such as stuffed toys and Lego construction toys.

Concept and design

Red was created during the development of Angry Birds (2009). As with most characters in the game, he was designed as a round, limbless bird. Early concept artwork by designer Jaakko Iisalo depicted a crude design of Red, then called "George", in a role-playing setting. Red was created with no unique abilities, risking his exclusion from the game at one point.[1]

After the release of Angry Birds, Red had no official name, being informally named "the red bird" in most sources.[2] The name "Red" was used for the character's in-game profile in Angry Birds Trilogy (2012),[3] and has remained his name since then. As the Angry Birds brand grew, Red became the mascot of the franchise due to his distinct design and fiery temper.[1]

Sources conflict between which species of cardinalis Red is; some describe him as a northern cardinal[4] while the 2013 book Angry Birds: Hatching a Universe describes him as a desert cardinal.[1]

Appearances

Various official sources describe Red as "the angriest of the birds." Characterized by a notoriously short temper, he is overprotective of the eggs, which he views as the only hope for his species' survival. His wrath is invoked by anything he deems a threat to the eggs, particularly the pigs, who seek to eat them. Despite his irascibility, he also works as the de facto leader of the birds, tending to them like a parental figure.[3][1]

Red is the first character introduced to the player in the first Angry Birds video game. He serves the role of being the most standard playable bird by having no unique abilities.[2][5] In 2013, a post-launch update introduced the "Red's Mighty Feathers" episode, which is focused on Red and introduces an ability that allows him to lock onto and target enemy pigs.[6] Red would gain another unique ability in Angry Birds 2 (2015), in which he can push over structures rightwards with red sound waves.[7]

Following Sega's acquisition of Rovio Entertainment in 2023,[8] Red was added as a playable character in Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble (2024) as downloadable content in April 2025. Playing as him transforms all bananas in a level into red feathers.[9][10]

Outside of the video games, Red appears as the protagonist of The Angry Birds Movie (2016), its 2019 sequel, and its upcoming 2027 sequel.[11] In all three of the films, he is voiced by Jason Sudeikis.[12][13][14]

Reception

Legacy

On March 20, 2016, Red was appointed as the honorary ambassador for that year's International Day of Happiness "as an envoy to inspire climate action toward a sustainable and happier future for all".[citation needed]

In 2023, Nebraskan photographer Scott Taylor captured a photo of a cardinal that later gained notoriety for closely resembling Red.[4]
