Redefined a Cappella is the premier coed collegiate a cappella group at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Known for its experimental sound, Redefined was founded in 2001 by Nate Mendl and Andrew Jarvinen as the first coed a cappella group in Madison. Redefined gained an international fanbase due to its viral music videos, especially its Nintendo medley that gained 100 million views on Ebaumsworld and Collegehumor in the early 2000s (the videos have since been taken down, but there is a copy with 3.9 million views on youtube),[1] and its cover of the song Pompeii by Imagine Dragons.[2] Redefined has been featured on multiple radio shows, NBC dateline[3], and in theaters around the Midwestern United States. The group generally consists of between 11 and 15 vocalists as well as two Vocal Percussionists. The two vocal percussionists, while uncommon in collegiate a cappella groups, are a signature of Redefined, providing complex beats for each song, as well as the "booming" bass prevalent in many of their videos.[4] Redefined first performed to the public at Mills Hall in Madison, Wisconsin on February 16, 2002 during the regional round of the International Championship of Collegiate Acappella.
Videos[edit]
Redefined was first pushed into the national spotlight after they performed a medley of Nintendo theme songs at their spring concert in 2004. Many versions of the video were shared on online message boards and discussions, including eBaum's World and Collegehumor. A copy of the video can be found on youtube with 3.9 million views.[5] On May 4, 2014, Redefined released their first creatively directed music video for their cover of the song Pompeii by Imagine Dragons. The cover received praise for its "fantastic music" but also for its unique approach to a cappella music videos.[6] On May 9, 2015, Redefined released its second creative video, this time for a mashup of One Direction songs titled "Steal My Girl / Night Changes". This video, although it received substantially less views, received critical acclaim, winning a Contemporary A Cappella Society award[7] and being called "One of the most well-produced videos we've come across in quite some time" by the College Acappella Blog.[8]
History[edit]
Redefined was started in 2001 by two men who were upset at the lack of coed a cappella at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The original group of 18 people made their public debut at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella quarterfinal round in December of 2002. Since then, Redefined has travelled around the Midwest performing.[9] Their performance venues have included weddings, public schools, christmas parties, professional sports games, and even NBC Dateline.[10]
The group spends most of their over six hours a week of rehearsal workshopping and learning arrangements of popular songs.[11] Redefined performs only original arrangements written by members of the group, and occasionally alumni. They also pick all of the songs that they sing to try to craft a playlist that will appeal to the young and old alike.[12] The arrangements that Redefined is best known for are experimental arrangements that differ substantially from what other a cappella groups covering the same songs would sing[13]
