Reform Radio is an online radio station from Manchester, United Kingdom. It broadcasts "music, arts, and culture from Manchester to the world". As a Community Interest Company, they use the framework of their award-winning station to support young people in meaningful employment, education or training...[1]. It uses radio as a tool to engage with young unemployed adults from across the North. It uses the process of making art, such as radio, to develop digital and transferable skills, while improving confidence and wellbeing. Post-project, they offer career and one-to-one pastoral support that is individually tailored so that all young adults have the opportunity to realise their full potential.

They all work together to create Reform’s content, supported by regular outside broadcasts within the city, as well as specially recorded shows from artists across the globe.

History

Background

In 2013, three friends – Jemma Tanswell, Rachel Roger, and Samuel Oliveira – thought about using the new online radio scene expansion to bring unemployed young people together. With the help of five young creative people and their savings, they funded a pilot and a radio station to broadcast on [2].

Development

In May 2014, they started using their shared house basement to broadcast. Within a year, the number of DJs and artists coming to the studio made the trio think about a bigger space to broadcast from. In 2015 and with the help of Allied London, they were offered to settle into the Old Granada Studios. They soon started to drift into full-time broadcasting, offering the possibility for young people to get employed regularly.

By 2018, their growth pushed them to build a whole new studio in Bonded Warehouse. Reform’s new space includes two high-end studios, a small-cap, live-to-air event space with the custom sound installation, and modular workshop and office spaces[3].

Today

The Mixcloud Online Radio Awards recognised Reform as one of the top five radio stations in Europe[citation needed]. The radio station is also a Manchester City Council Cultural partner, and participates in showcasing the city on a global scale[4].

They also made programs for partners such as Gaydio [5], Hits Radio [6], BBC Radio 2 [7], BBC Radio 1Xtra [8], and BBC Radio 6 Music [9].

Reform Radio also collaborated with the Manchester International Festival (MIF) and Creative City for a Library festival called Rhythmshawe [10]. Another collaboration was Reform and Jagermeister, a long term partnership that gave the radio the necessary tools for the We Out Here Festival [11] [12] and other projects like Co-Lab Theory [13] that gave the opportunity to artists to perform in Reform's studios during the lockdown in 2020. Artists like Mr Scruff and Swing Ting joined that project. Tom Carson, the music manager at Jagermeister, explained that they "[...] wanted to make sure the world doesn't press pause".

Awards

Reform Radio is also a production company, which won Gold at the British Podcast Awards for their ‘Tough Talks’ series [14], as well as Promotion of Environmental Sustainability and the Manchester People's Culture Award in 2021 [15]. Some of Reform’s projects were also nominated and awarded during the Young Music Awards 2021, for the Outstanding Project Award, Outstanding Act Award & Live Performance Award [16][17][18]
