Early Life and Education

Lanning was born in Tisdale, SK on July 29, 1978. As she was growing up, her family moved frequently until finally settling in Weyburn, SK in 1988. Her early years were a health struggle as Lanning was sick with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis.

From the time she was a young child, Regan had a great interest in art. Throughout high school, Regan took art classes from Eltje Degenhart, [1] a Holland-born artist who taught at the Weyburn Comprehensive School [2] for 27 years. After Regan graduated from the Weyburn Comprehensive School in 1996, Lanning travelled to Davao City, Philippines where she was an exchange student through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Her time there influenced her worldview and her art practice.

After the exchange, Lanning attended her first year of University through distance learning from Weyburn. In 1998, she went to the University of Regina, starting her BFA in painting. Unfortunately, due to health issues, Regan withdrew from the University in 2000.

In 2001, Lanning moved to Saskatoon, SK to be closer to her Grandmother, Norrie, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer and passed away in 2002.

Lanning moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 2003, and was married in 2004, in Bethel, Ohio.

Lanning and her husband moved back to Weyburn, SK in 2006. Their son, Mandred (Manny), was born in 2006, and their daughter, Norrie, was born three years later in 2009.

Career

Lanning is an interdisciplinary artist working with political themes in her art practice. She has two main series. The first is a portrait series called "Women of the World". This series of paintings critically looks at the reality of life for many women through the lens of refugees, protests, life boats, and genocide. The second series Lanning has been working on is Portrait Plates which she started in 2018. This series features hand-built pottery pieces featuring slip-trailed portraits of the people, places and things close to the artist.

Lanning's career as a curator and artist in Weyburn started when she served as a member on the Weyburn Arts Council from 2012 - 2015. In 2015, she was hired as the curator for the City of Weyburn. Throughout this experience, she has brought forward a lot of important art programs into the city.

In 2016, the "Paint in the Pub" program started as a way of bringing art out of the art centre and into the community. This program ended in 2017. In 2016, Lanning began filming a monthly TV show with Access Communication called "Adventures in Art". Each episode is filmed at local art events, galleries, receptions or in local artist's studios. This TV show helps bring the viewers into the art scene of Weyburn, Saskatchewan. "Adventure in Art" airs every Sunday on the community channel. The "Boardwalk Banner Project" was installed in 2017. This project consisted of 18 art banners installed in the town, made by local artists. The project also consisted of a walking tour booklet. This project was sponsored by community business groups in Weyburn.

While working as curator, Lanning also developed the Weyburn Credit Union Partnership. This facilitated the creation of a large collaborative mural with 40 established and emerging artists. She has worked with the Weyburn Credit Union to help promote and adjudicate the "Weyburn in Focus" community art calendar.[4]

She curated the "Mud to Mug" exhibition, "Acoustic Afternoons", and "Maker of the Month" projects.

From 2015 - 2017, Lanning was a board member of the Weyburn Art Farm. The Weyburn Art Farm Festival was an event that ran for five years. The intention of the Art Farm was to inspire and gather artists, and provide them with a place to show and market their work to the community. The Art Farm was very successful in its five years, and it partnered with other non-profit groups. [5]
