Reggie Rose - Co-founder of Chaparral Boats and Co-founder of Monterey Boats[edit]
1958 - After an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Reggie Rose relocated from his hometown of Huntington, West Virginia to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and began his lifelong love of the boat manufacturing trade when he went to work for CarAqua Boats. These boats did not have wheels but had distinctive Chevy-style headlights and tail fins. CarAqua closed in 1959.
1959 - Rose then went to work for Plastic Engineering & Chemical Co. in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He assisted in the invention and development of the first fiberglass chopper gun, known as "Glas-Mate." He personally developed new tooling methods, including superior tooling gelcoat formulas. He also developed standards for sprayed chop and hand laid fiberglass woven roving ratios to achieve maximum laminate strength. He supervised and implemented field training for boat manufacturer's employees. These manufactures included Bertram, Chris Craft and Thunderbird among others.
1963 - Rose then went into business with a man named Harold Pegg when Rose acquired a 50% interest in a company Harold founded called Fiberglass Fabricators. At the time Harold's company owned fiberglass equipment and a 2,000 sq ft shop but no customers or employees. Rose went to work immediately to create a burgeoning customer base. Within a year the company needed additional manufacturing space and Rose leased the closed CarAqua factory space. Harold Pegg's son William "Buck" Pegg joined the company as a working partner. Rose developed a process for Pompanette Fishing Chairs to make molded fiberglass seat boards, arm rests and seat backs. This process is still used today. Fiberglass Fabricators, under Rose's direction did the first tooling for Marine Muffler's, Inc and rolled out the first production mufflers.
1965 - After completing a contract to build fiberglass hulls and decks for Fish N Ski Boat Co. Buck Pegg and Rose decided to start their own boat line called Chaparral Boats. With exceptional tooling and fit and finish, along with Rose's innovative seating designs such as forward facing bow seats plus bench seats on molded fiberglass and polyurethane. These boats that had features such as portable foam insulated coolers made Chaparral Boats stand out in a crowded runabout market. Chaparral Boats relocated to Nashville, GA in 1976.
1977 - After 14 years as President and co-owner of Fiberglass Fabricators/Chaparral Boats, Rose sold his 50% interest with a 7 year non-compete agreement.
1985 - Rose joined the Marshall Brothers as a partner and co-founded Monterey Boats. Rose handled new product development including R&D and Design Engineeringfor the next 22 years.
2006 - Monterey Boats reached 500 employees and a manufacturing space of a half-million square feet situated on 80 acres adjacent to the Williston, Florida airport.
