Relayball
Relayball is a sport created by Zane Gardner. Relay Ball is a form of non contact football, Players must score from an end zone with either Lacrosse goals, & or Basketball hoop. The game is played one on one non contact. The game is played on basketball courts. Relayball was a sport to fill the void of Special Olympics in the North Country New York region after years of not having Special Olympics. Also this is an outdoor variation of Roomball.
Main Game
In the Main game of Relay Ball you have two opposing sides, an offense and a defense. The offense has to run the ball up to the goal and score a goal. There is an all time Goalie position that has to throw the ball and then a receiver has to catch it.
History
Since the league played games mostly at Outdoor Recreation Club. Pick up games and even in backyards. Outdoor Recreation mostly played the game of Relayball at local college in Canton, New York on game days. The vary first school to host Relayball was the DeKalb church with there kids.
Rules[edit]
In the game of Relay Ball you have two opposing sides: An Offense and Defense. This can be One vs. One Centers, Two vs. Two One Center and one midfielder, 3 v 3 Center, midfielder, & goalie. Any players more than that is a sub on a team. An Outdoor Basketball court (90 ft x 60 ft) is used as the court size. Your team switches position after each goal is made. When a goal is reached, teams switch sides. A goal is worth 1 point. The goal used is typically a Lacrosse Goal. The Ball typically used is a Mini Basketball.
The Game Starts with a coin toss. The winner of the toss will have their Goalie receive the ball. They will have to move the ball forward from the end zone. You cannot travel backwards with the ball.
The Ball needs to be passed to everyone on your team (Relayed) before you can score a goal. This does not apply in 1 v 1 games.
The official clock rules are usually 5 points, 2 games each game. If they reach overtime, the game will end. There are no ovetime rules.
When a ball is in your possession, you must be traveling with the ball or dribbling the ball like a basketball. You cannot stop and stand still with the ball. Stopping is a Technical Foul.
No Charging the Defense or Offense is allowed. This is a Foul.
No Tackling Players. This is a Foul.
Striking the ball when it’s in contact of someone else will result in a foul.
The ball can only be stolen by the opposition when the ball is traveling in the air between passes or intercepted during an attempt to score the ball into the goal.
The ball needs to be thrown into the goal. It cannot be traveled in.[1]
Variations[2][edit]
The main variant of Relayball is Air Bat with a table top version of the game. The game is similar to paper football. The other variations are goal lines like in American Football, four downs until crossing the goal line. In Air Bat the point is scored when the ball lands on the floor.
Ball[edit]
A normal ball in Relayball they use is a Mini Basketball. In Air Bat they use a small basketball found in Trashcan Basketball games, If that’s not available they also use a tennis ball.
