Release Athens is an annual international music festival held in Athens, Greece. Its main goal is to introduce as many musical genres as possible, ‘’without any limits or boundaries’’. The festival is held at Nero (Water) Square in South Athens. The first edition of the festival took place back in 2016. Held for 4 consecutive years it was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, but restarted in 2022.[1][2]

2016[edit]
The inaugural edition of the festival took place in early June of 2016. Performers included P.J. Harvey, Sigur Ros, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.[1][3][4]
2017[edit]
During the second year (2 & 16 June) Release Athens hosted bands like Röyksopp, Moderat, Archive, and Thievery Corporation, and also local artists from the alternative music scene.[1][3][5]
2018[edit]
The third year of the festival took place on 31 May, and 2 & 17 June 2018.[1] Among the artists performed were Thievery Corporation, Jamiroquai, Richard Ashcroft, Parov Stelar, and UB40.[6][7][8][9][10]
2019[edit]
Release Athens 2019 took place on 7–30 June.[1] Performers included Iggy Pop,[11][12][13][14] Manowar,[15][16] Anthrax, Alice in Chains, Disturbed, Clutch, Damian Marley,[12] Johnny Marr, New Order, James, Hozier, Morcheeba, and the hip hop group Cypress Hill.[17][18][19]
2022[edit]
After three years, Release Athens restarted with the 2022 edition. The festival lasted from 8 June till 23 July.[1] The line-up included Nick Cave,[20] Pet Shop Boys,[21][22] Iggy Pop, Liam Gallagher,[23] Manowar,[24][25] Judas Priest, Slipknot,[26] Parov Stelar[27] et al. Also Greek artists such as Rotting Christ, Giannis Aggelakas and K.Bhta appeared.[24][25][28]
