Religious bias on Wikipedia

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

On Wikipedia, certain editors on the online encyclopedia have exhibited a religious bias towards or against certain religions or religious viewpoints.[1][2][3] This can manifest in a number of ways, including the deletion or alteration of content related to a particular religion,[4] the inclusion of inaccurate or biased information about religion, or the use of a non-neutral point of view when editing articles about religious[5][6][7] or vice-versa subjects.[8][9][10][11][12] Some editors on Wikipedia have been accused of using their position to promote their own religious beliefs, or to denigrate or marginalize the beliefs of others.[13][14][15][16][17][18] This can lead to a distortion of information and a lack of neutrality on the website,[19] which can harm the credibility and reliability of Wikipedia as a source of information.[20][21][22][23]

Specific instances[edit]

  • In January 2009, a case involving Scientology was brought before Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee. Wikipedia administrators presented evidence during the case that Church of Scientology-controlled computers were used to promote the organization, using multiple user accounts.[24] One user, going by the pseudonym "COFS", admitted this pattern of editing and stated the edits from Scientology computers would continue. In May 2009, the Arbitration Committee decided to restrict editing from IP addresses belonging to the Church of Scientology to prevent biased edits.[25][26]
  • In 2020, there were allegations against several Wikipedia users and admins for being religiously biased and left leaning, after an article titled 2020 Tablighi Jamaat coronavirus hotspot in Delhi was deleted.[27][28][29][30]
  • In 2022, some editors edited the page of Indian cricketer Arshdeep Singh, and falsely inserted his religion as Khalistan. This led to widespread controversy.[31][32][33][34]
