A noble and very ancient family from Trentino, originally known as the Schir di Serrada (Dukes of Serrada), which spread over the centuries to various European regions. Tradition has it that the Rella family originated in Andalusia, where they must have been included among the 'Moorish nobles'. However, when the Catholic Reconquista took place in 1492, because of their Catholic faith and Moorish blood, the Schir di Moresco were forced to leave their homeland, finding refuge in Venice, where many 'Spanish fugitives' were welcomed. The current surname would have originated with 'Domenico Schir da Serrada Rohela' (1390-1480). He, in fact, took his name from the Cimbrian 'Rohela', deriving from the Germanic 'Ruhe' (= rest, calm). His descendants then constantly kept the surname 'Rohela', but after a few years it was easily changed to 'Rella'. A further branch of the family also called itself Spilzi. The family over time translocated from Venice to Trento, where they lived on the main square Piazza del Duomo in the so-called Cazuffi-Rella houses. These houses are two adjoining 16th century buildings in Trento, in Piazza del Duomo 10, which have been used as noble residence by the family.
