Rena Kurban gizi Aliyeva (Azerbaijani: Rəna Qurban qızı Əliyeva; January 21, 1948) — Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor. President of the Azerbaijan Dental Association.[1] She is a member of the Academic Council Azerbaijan Medical University, the Academic Council of the Faculty of Dentistry, a member of the Dissertation Council. Member of the International Dental Academy (USA), member of the editorial board of the journals "Maestro Dentistry" (Russia) and "Dentistry" (Uzbekistan), founder and editor-in-chief of the journal "Vestnik Stomatologii Kavkaza".[2]
Biography[edit]
Aliyeva Rena Kurban gizi was born on 21 January 1948 in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. In 1966, upon her graduation from the general secondary school No. 8 in Baku with medal, she has admitted to the Faculty of Dentistry of Azerbaijan Medical Institute (AMI) named after N. Narimanov. After graduating from the Institute in 1971, by the Decision of the Academic Council, she was sent to the clinical internship of the Department of Dental Surgery of AMI, and in 1973, she was employed by the Department of Dentistry in the Azerbaijan State Institute for the Improvement of Doctors named after A.Aliyev, where she started her professional career as a Senior Lab Assistant until an Associate Professor of the Department.
The scientific interests of R. Aliyeva have always distinguished by their great breadth and novelty of research and were of undoubted interest for specialists.
In 1991, R. Aliyeva has brilliantly defended her Ph.D thesis titled "The functional state of the adrenal cortex, pancreatitis and thyroid glands in patients with phlegmons of the maxillofacial region" (thesis advisers: a correspondent member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, doctor of medical sciences, Professor N.N. Bajanov and a correspondent member Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor İ. İ. Dedov) in the central Scientific-Research İnstitute of Dentistry of the Ministry of Health of the USSR in Moscow, as a result of which she got a degree of Candidate of Medical Science. Later until 1998, R. Aliyeva continued her professional career in the Azerbaijan State Institute for the Improvement of Doctors named after A. Aliyev.
In April 1998, R. Aliyeva was elected as the Head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Azerbaijan Medical University, which she continues to lead.
During this period, the scientific research interests of R. Alieva have been expanded beyond studying of a critical problem - dental morbidity and the provision of a specialized care to the population in connection with the change in the economic model of the Republic of Azerbaijan. [3]
The result of these studies became a hard work - a doctoral dissertation on the topic: "Working out the optimal model for the development of dental services for the child population of the Republic of Azerbaijan" that the author has defended in 2001 in Moscow, in the Central Scientific Research Institute of Dentistry (TsNIIS) of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (scientific consultant - full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor A.K. Leontiev).[4]
Scientific activity[edit]
R. Aliyeva was the author of over fifty academic-scholarly works, including six textbooks and ten methodological tools. Her works have been published in various parts of the world.
Furthermore, R. Aliyeva is a member of the Scientific Council of the Azerbaijan Medical University, Scientific Council of the Faculty of Dentistry and member of the Dissertation Council.
R. Alieva pays great attention to the training of young specialists, as well as academic and practical personnel. Under her supervision, eight Ph.D. theses have been completed, whereas at present two doctoral and four master's theses are being carried out.
Career[edit]
R. Aliyeva is a scientist of a wide range opportunities: in 2005 she was elected as a Member of the International Informatization Academy (Canada, Montreal), in 2007, she was elected as a Member of the Academy of Dentistry International, USA. Since 1997, she has been acting as the President of the Azerbaijan Dental Association. She is also the founder and editor-in-chief of the first international medical journal in the South Caucasus and Azerbaijan, “Вестник Стоматологии Кавказа” (Bulletin of Dentistry in the Caucasus).[5]
R. Aliyeva is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Dentistry Journals “Маэстростоматологии” (Maestro of Dentistry) of Russia, “Стоматология” (Dentistry) of Uzbekistan.
The Azerbaijan Dental Association, led by her, has prepared and conducted over 20 international conferences and symposia on topical problems in dental practice. The Azerbaijan Dental Association has already been a member of the FDI - World Dental Federation for 20 years, and since 2003 is a Member of the European Regional Organization of the Federation Dentaire Internationale (ERO).
For all these years, R. Alieva, has properly represented Azerbaijani dentistry at the international level, attending the congresses of the World Dental Federation, of the European Regional Organization, the Russian Dental Association, and of associations of Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia and other countries.
Awards[edit]
For many years of work and merits for the development of health care system in Azerbaijan, by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, she was awarded the title "Honored Scientist" and "Honorary Doctor", and was also awarded the medal "For Valiant Labor" and Diploma of the Ministry of Health.
