Renato de Almeida Freitas Junior, mostly known as Renato Freitas, is a black city councillor in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.[1]
Biography
Renato Freitas was brought up and lived most of his life within the poorest parts of Curitiba. His estranged father died soon after being released from Piraquara Prison (Paraná) and his older brother was murdered the year before Renato Freitas joined Universidade Federal do Paraná. In his master university dissertation "Prisões e Quebradas: O Campo em Evidência"[2], Renato Freitas uses his own self as subject of study with regards to poverty and racial discrimination.
Protests Against the Murders of Moïse and Durval and Entry Into the Igreja do Rosário dos Pretos de São Benedito
On Saturday 05th February 2022, several anti-racism groups organised protests across Brasil with regards to the murders of Congolese migrant Moïse and a Brazilian young man, Durval. In Curitiba, the groups gathered in front of Igreja do Rosário dos Pretos de São Benedito - a frequent spot for protests against racism due to the significance of that church to the local black community of Curitiba[3].
Igreja do Rosário dos Pretos de São Benedito was built in 1737[4][5] by black people who had been kidnapped, trafficked, kept in captivity and endured physical and mental torture as enslaved people. White people in Curitiba would not permit that black people would enter the only two churches in the city. Therefore, despite all the hardship and suffering, black people took upon themselves to build their own church. That church was built by black people, for black people. A burial site for black people was also built around the church. Slavery was not abolished in Brasil until 1888. White people eventually demolished the original church in 1931 and built another church on top of the area where the old church and the cemetery were present. Some of the tiles from the original church were reused on the new church and can still be seen today. Memorycide of black heritage, culture and history is not uncommon in Curitiba - today, the 3rd city with the highest number of active neo-nazi cells[6].
Curitiba has been nicknamed "Nazitiba" due to its Nazi history and current concentration of far right ideologies, specially among evangelicals who often misuse Jewish religious symbols to denote moral righteousness[7].
Whilst the several groups were pacifically protesting outside the church, after the mass had ended, priest Luis Haas - who had already changed from his paroquial clothing into jeans and a shirt, approached the main church door and asked why the groups would not protest elsewhere. The priest seemed completely disconnected from recent events and the pain which afflicted the local black community and people who oppose racism. Some people called the priest a racist and, to the shock of all, Priest Luis Haas proudly waved his raised right thumb in agreement. Images by Brasil de Fato Paraná evidence this [8]. It was reasonable to expect that the priest would know about such events of violence against black people. It was evident that the priest would have been very welcomed to celebrate the mass outside, with the people protesting the murders.
The group then decided to enter the church through another front door, which was an open point of entry for any passer by wishing to enter the church. No violence was used, no damage was caused and nobody's prayers were interrupted. There was no person leading the entry into the church and there had been no plans to enter the church as part of the protests - it was a spontaneous and collective decision made by the group. Inside the church, people spoke about the suffering endured by black people and a lady sang a heart felt song about black people. The entire visit lasted no longer than 10 minutes and it can be viewed on the church's own youtube channel which transmitted the mass and the group entry and exit entirely [9][8].
Renato Freitas has been persecuted ever since by his right wing council peers, who seek his impeachment. Renato Freitas has also been receiving several threats to life[10].
Over 14,000 signatures have already been gathered through an online petition on Change.org "Em Defesa do Mandato de Renato Freitas" - in support of Renato Freitas and a tag #JuntosComRenatoFreitas has been used to show support online.
The proceedings within Curitiba Council against Renato Freitas continue[11], despite a request from the local Arquidiocese in support of Renato Freitas legislative mandate[12].
Several people within catholicism and the general population have publicly shown support to Renato Freitas. Including Frei David of Educafro, Padre Julio Lancellotti, Eduardo Moreira, Eduardo Marinho [13], Leonardo Boff [14], Pastor Ariovaldo, councillor Professora Josete Dubiaski da Silva, Professor Liliana Porto, Pastor Ana Azevedo, among others.
On a video, Renato Freitas proposed a moment of reflection and to think of the situation if it was the other way around. If it was a group of Italian migrants, protesting the murder of their people, in front of a church built by Italians, for Italians and that if the priest was black and asked the Italians to protest elsewhere - and how absurd that situation would be. The absurdity which is practiced as normality towards black people in Curitiba[15][16].
Curitiba Council and Ethics Committee
Curitiba Council is composed of 38 public elected councillors. It has a right christian wing prevalence, of which most support mayor Rafael Greca de Macedo[17].
Rafael Greca de Macedo is part of Democratas 25 political party[18][19]. Democratas is a direct lineage of former ARENA party - the political party which lead the dictatorship in Brazil[20][21][22]. Democratas 25 and PSL 17 - Partido Social Liberal (the political party which elected Jair Bolsonaro president of Brasil in 2018) have joined to form União Brasil 44[23][24][25].
Councillor Dalton Borba PDT12 is the president of the Ethics Committee[26]. Councillor Sidnei Toaldo (Patriota 51) will write the final report, together with councillor Maria Letícia Fagundes (PV43).
