Renexia SpA is a renewable energy development company based in Italy.

Renexia's fields of activity are the design, construction, operation and maintenance of wind farms, both onshore and offshore, and photovoltaic plants.[1]. They also include the development of parking and charging areas for electric vehicles, mainly on the highway network[2].

Through its subsidiary US Wind, Renexia is also present in the United States of America for the development of offshore wind farms in the Atlantic Ocean[3].

History

Renexia was established as a spin-off of the Toto Group's renewable energy division in 2011. Two years later, it built a wind farm in Puglia, a 23-MW plant powered by GE's 2.85 MW wind turbines[4].

In March 2021, Renexia signed an agreement with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA to purchase ten wind turbines for a 35-megawatt (MW) onshore wind farm in Campania, Italy, currently under construction[5].

On April 21, 2022, Renexia completed the construction of Beleolico, the first offshore wind farm in Italy and in the Mediterranean, a few yards off the Port of Taranto, with a total combined capacity of 30 MW and an estimated output of 58,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) per year[6][7][8].

In the same year, Renexia started an extensive field campaign for the Med Wind floating wind farm project in the Strait of Sicily, one of the biggest renewable energy projects planned for the Mediterranean Sea, with 190 floating turbines and an installed capacity of 2.8 GW, enough to power 3.4 million homes a year. Researchers of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn of Naples conducted the oceanographic survey, and data were collected using a FLiDAR supplied by Eolos[9]. Fugro has been awarded to collect geo-data to advise on geohazard risk mitigation and identify a safe route for the export cables[10], while RINA is preparing the final integrated environmental impact assessment (EIA) application[11][12] and Technip Energies is expected to perform the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the floating foundations and the conceptual design for the floating offshore substations[13][14].

In the United States, through its subsidiary US Wind, a company headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, it won the auction for a 25-year leases for both Wind Energy Areas (WEA) in Maryland established by the BOEM. It is one of the largest offshore wind farm projects in the United States, on an area that could host turbines to provide enough energy to power 300,000 households annually[15].

Projects

Renexia’s key projects include:

  • Beleolico, an offshore marine wind farm the Port of Taranto, equipped with 10 wind turbines for a nominal installed capacity of 30 MW[16];
  • offshore wind farms in Maryland, MarWin and Momentum Wind, developed by the subsidiary US Wind, with a total planned generation capacity of between 1.1 GW and 2 GW[17];
  • Med Wind, the Mediterranean's first floating offshore wind farm in the Strait of Sicily, currently in the permitting phase[18];
  • Monte Eboli photovoltaic plant, with a capacity of 24 MW and a production of 33,000 MWh per year[19];
  • onshore wind farm in Ponte Albanito with a capacity of 22.8 MW and enough to meet the energy needs of 15,000 households[20];
  • photovoltaic system installed on the roofs of the Abruzzo Freight[24]
