Renque is a software application designed for discrete-event simulation. It is used mainly for analysis of business processes in support of decision-making and change management[1][2][3][4]. The development of Renque was initiated two decades ago by Dr. Van Zee at the former Dutch consulting firm Computational Engineering Inc, in search of a suitable analysis tool for the management of pharmaceutics production. Since then, Renque has evolved into a universal simulator for workflow systems. The name Renque is an acronym for Resources, ENtities and QUEues.
Model construction and operation
A Renque model is constructed on-screen by placing server objects on a worksheet and interconnecting these servers by links. During a simulation, entities are created, which migrate through the network of servers and links by traveling from server to server on the links. The simulation imitates a real process in a figurative manner, essentially by the spread of entities across the model.
Entity transitions in the model can be observed in animation during a simulation run, which provides insight into the model and helps communicating results. Various simulation data and statistics are recorded for results review and post-processing. The simulation model may be customized through scripting in the Python or BASIC languages. The scripts are composed in the built-in script editor Sxcript with automatic code completion and error checking.
Application areas
The general-purpose nature of the Renque simulation engine and the abstraction power of discrete event simulation result in a wide range of potential applications [5]. Among the most frequently mentioned application areas are healthcare services, call centers and computer networking. Renque has been successfully applied to study a variety of activities in processing, manufacturing and services [6].
