Requiem is a death metal band from Siebnen, Switzerland.
History[edit]
Guitarists Philipp Klauser and Ralph Inderbitzin founded the band together with drummer Roger Kradolfer in 1997. 1998 Michi Kuster joined, doing vocals and bass. In the same year, the band also started having their first gigs and recorded their first demo promo tape called Prophecies of a Dark Millenium, however the demo never got published.
In 1999, Andi Fuhrer replaced Roger Kradolfer as drummer. The band developed their characteristic during this period and had numerous gigs throughout Europe, although they still didn't have a record deal.
Their first release was in 2001, an EP called Nameless Grave, published by the Swiss label Fastbeast Entertainment, the record was well received by the community. This led the band to finally get a record deal with Revenge Production[1]. Formed at Birth, their first album was released on 28th March 2003, with Reto Crola as drummer. Due to their first album, the band got to play at larger festivals as well as support band for Messiah.
By the end of 2003, Roger Crola had to leave the band due to work-related reasons; he was replaced with a former drummer. Also bassist Patrick Hersche from Messiah joined the band, so that Michi Kuster could concentrate entirely on vocals. He left the band due to health reasons in the following year and was replaced by Ralf Winzer.
In autumn 2005, the band supported Vital Remains on their Europe tour. In the same year, they also recorded their second album Government Denies Knowledge in 2005, produced by Jean-Fracois Dagenais of Kataklysm. This finally drew the attention to bigger labels on the band, leading to a contract with Massacre Records. Eventually, the album was released on 27 January 2006.
Their third album, Premier Killing League, was recorded in 2006 by Andy Classen in the Stage One Studio and released on 23rd March 2007. Following the release, the band had several tours through Europe. Ralf Inderbitzin left the band during these tours due to personal reasons, which lead the band to continue as a quartet. They went on to Vader and Belphegor on their UK and Netherlands tours. Shortly after, in August 2007, the band published their first music video for Premier Killing League, which was broadcast on SRF zwei, a Swiss television channel.
In 2008, they went on a Europe tour with Lividity and got a contract with the label Twilight Vertrieb. Later in the year, in December, they published their fourth album Infiltrate… Obliterate… Dominate…, which again was recorded by Andy Classen. On 31st July 2009, they published their fourth album via Twilight Vertrieb. Another music video for the song Marked by the Signs of Chaos followed in 2010. The band also provided the soundrack for the porn film Filthy Fucking Friends #1, released in 2009.
In February 2010, singer Michi Kuster announced to leave the band after 13 years. Bassist Ralf Winzer replaced vocals and the band continued with only three members.
In 2010, the band recorded their fifth studio album Within Darkened Disorder, releasing it on 6 May. Again, the album was recorded at Classen's studio. By the end of 2013, Kuster joined the band again as well as second guitarist Matthias Schiemann.
Style[edit]
Requiem's music style is old school death metal, however newer albums do have some breaks, changes in tempo as well as some slower interludes. Requiem primarily plays uncompromising old-school death metal, which, however, is loosened up by occasional breaks, tempo variations and some quieter interludes, especially on the newer albums. Their main style correlates with Florida death metal but they also use grindcore and thrash metal elements. Oftentimes they are matched with Malevolent Creation in reviews. Crolas variable and precise drumming and Winzers death growl have also been honourably mentioned.[2][3]
Their lyrics are often about social criticism until the album Premier Killing League („I, Terrorist“, „The System Has Failed“)which reflects on their album covers. At the same time though, they explicitly explain that they're no political band. They also criticise the church in one song („The Great Masquerade“). Lyrics also contain psychological topics and personal experiences.[4]
Their fourth album Infiltrate… Obliterate… Dominate… focuses on mysticism, historical and philosophical topics. Their song and music video Marked by the Signs of Chaos“ for example is about the Zodiac Killer. To that effect, the album cover, designed by Dan Seagrave,is gloomy and morbid in style.[5][6]
