Respoken (និយាយឡើងវិញ) is a 2024 Cambodian short documentary directed by Sidney Ken and Thai Phirun Hul.[1] It won the Best Documentary Award along with the cash prize at the 4th Cambodia National Short Film Festival[2], Best Short Film Director Award and Best Short Film Award at the 3rd Cambodia Asian Film Festival[3][4]. The film initially premiered as Official Selection in Documentary Category for the 13th Chaktomuk Short Film Festival[2]. In early 2025, Respoken has held its local screening at the 14th Cambodia International Film Festival[5] from March 21-29, 2025.
Synopsis
Respoken is a short documentary about the few Cambodian artists who have been struggling to bring Cambodia's Lakhon Niyeay (Spoken Theater) back to its glory days amidst the modern age.[6] The main storyline follows Mr. Nen Phearith, leader of the playgroup "EsaiVoler", in the process of trying to organize their upcoming performance of "Kolab Pailin" while having low ticket sales. Featured interviewees include Mr. Soung Sopheak, Mr. Seng Ponrong, Ms. Chan Sreyleak, and Mrs. Chhon Syna has voiced their own perspectives, brought up their individual efforts in preserving Lakhon Noyeay, as well as their own concerns about this ever dwindling art form.[1]
