"Resurrection" was the fourth single by MC Shadow and first release since 1994 and part one of a three track music and film project dubbed ‘The Trilogy’. The track features songstress and award winner Sarah Beatty and was produced by Frank ‘tekniq’ Morrel and Kory Neely. It debuted in fifth position on Canadian national campus independent music charts, remaining for several weeks. Music video[edit]

The music video was filmed August 31, 2015 and edited in two versions as the first chapter of a three part original short film and music video project slated for release in film festivals.[1][2] The Directors Cut version is approximately seven minutes in length and described as being "closer to a movie than a simple music video" [3] with MC Shadow (Neely) leading a crew of robbers pulling off a Bank Vault heist.[4] It featured the ominous, historical Dominion Bank Vault [5] (1914-1916) in One King Street West a popular film location and tourist attraction in Toronto. It precedes the second chapter titled ‘Lost’ [6] filmed in the winter of 2015 which Neely appears as the mysterious and elusive groups leader and features the characters from the first chapter as the police move in and apprehend the group, they are mysteriously being murdered in succession by an unknown accomplice. The conclusion titled Lullaby of Pain, (in production) reveals through a final series of plot twists the tales secrets and puppet master.

The song debuted in the number five spot on the !Earshot National Music Chart in the week of October 27, 2015 and remained within the top 10 count for several weeks.[7]

Critical reception[edit]

Samantha Stevens a columnist for The Voice Magazine in review described Resurrection as “Resurrection” begins with music that is reminiscent of a grand orchestra. The song picks up with the beginning of a steady beat and female backup vocals provided by Sarah Beatty. By the time MC Shadow's rap begins the music has already achieved an intensity that will have listeners hearts racing in anticipation.” [8] and called the song (including previous single 'Resurrection') as "... phenomenal and a credit to the rap and hip-hop genres."[9]

Cover artwork[edit]

The artwork for the cover was credited to two time JUNO award winner Nelson Garcia [10] aka Dedos of Nomadic Alternatives and a founding member of legendary hip hop group Rascalz and depicts an artistic drawing of the profile of MC Shadow.[11]

Composition[edit]

Recognized for its break from traditional Hip hop and Rap arrangements, “The original composition opens with a combination of classical violin and cello to achieve music that is reminiscent of a grand orchestra and with a guitar melody inspired by large cities, especially the darker side of life that reside in those cities.”[citation needed] Singer Sarah Beatty a Canadian folk singer also is featured briefly in the song. Resurrection is written in the key of E minor with a common time tempo of 72 beats per minute. Beatty's vocals span from B3 to A5 in the song.[citation needed]
