Revive the Rose are a Canadian hard rock band based out of Welland, Ontario.
History
Notre Dame College School school friends and founding members Andy Colonico, Peter Antoniou and Stephen Lawrence got together in Colonico's parents' home when they were in their senior year in 2013. They had practised a song by the band Nirvana called "In Bloom", recorded a video, with Colonico drumming and singing, and uploaded it to Facebook for their family and friends.
After this first session, the three did not see each other for almost a year; Colonico was busy with a punk-rock band called "Cops On Commission", and was attending the jazz program at Mohawk College. During his time at school, he met Matt Cookson, whose hometown was St. Catharines, Ontario. Around this time in 2014, with Cops on Commission winding down, Colonico reached out to Antoniou and Lawrence, and invited Cookson to develop and practise some original material with them. They wrote their first songs together as a four-piece, naming their project Revive the Rose as a tribute to the Rose City Hardcore music scene that died out in Welland.[1]
The band's first performance was at the 2014 Niagara’s Got Talent show.[2] By 2015 the group had played at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern and at the Scene Music Festival.[3]
In January 2016 Revive the Rose opened in St. Catharines for the Toronto trio Danko Jones.[4] In April the band performed in the Rock Search contest organized by St. Catharines radio station 97.7 HTZ-FM; they made the top 4 in the final round.[5] The radio station followed up by debuting and promoting their single Nine To Five later that year.[6][7] After performing at the Livestock Niagara show in September,[4] the band recruited drummer Andrew Gagnon, freeing Colonico to concentrate on singing and fronting the band. At this point, Lawrence left the band, and several other bass players filled in for short times.
In 2017 the band released an album Generation Breakdown; they were featured on CHCH Television's The Morning Show in May that year;[8] in the summer they toured around southern Ontario to support the album, opening for a comedy show at Niagara College[5] and finishing up at the Moose and Goose in Thorold in October.[9]
In 2018, after receiving airplay on several Ontario radio stations and being interviewed on the Humble & Fred show,[10][11] Revive the Rose released a video to accompany their single, "Moxie".[12] That year they also created a theme song for a local Ontario Hockey League team, the Ice Dogs, which was used by YourTV Niagara to accompany their coverage of the team.[13][14] The band also opened for The Glorious Sons and The Standstills. [15]
In September 2018 and again in July 2019 Revive the Rose performed on The Morning Show on Global Television.[15][16] In February 2019, Big Rig joined the band on bass when they were opening for metal band Anvil. Later that year they signed with Noisemaker Management, and released a self-titled LP through Snare Guy Records.[17][18] Their song "Bar Down" was featured on the 2019 Toronto Maple Leafs warm-up playlist[19]
