Rex Black

Rex Black (born July 16, 1964) is an American software quality engineer, entrepreneur[1], consultant, and an author in the field of software testing.[2][dead link] Black graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1990 with a bachelors of science in computer science and engineering.[1] In 1983, Black started work in the software engineering field and has spent more than 40 years[3] in software testing.[4][dead link][5][dead link]

Black is the founder and former president[6][7] of RBCS, Inc,[1][8] which he sold in 2023.[9][10] Black has taught courses in managing the testing process at the University of Texas at Austin Center for Lifelong Engineering Education (2000–2009)[11][dead link] and is an adjunct faculty member and course developer of business analysis and software testing curricula for Villanova University (2005–2017).[12] He was on the editorial board of Software Test & Performance Magazine.[13][not in citation given] More recently, Black worked as a QA Architect for Epic Games[14][15] (July 2022 – March 2026).

Software quality advocacy

From April 2005 to April 2009, Black was president of the International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB), an international group of 40 international boards responsible for the international qualification scheme called "ISTQB Certified Tester".[16][17][18] Black also co-authored the ISTQB Advanced Syllabus (released in July 2007),[19] and was vice chair of the Working Party Foundation Level ISTQB Syllabus.[20][dead link]

From January 2005 to January 2008, Black was president of the American Software Testing Qualifications Board (ASTQB), a branch of the International Software Testing Qualifications Board. He also sat on the ASTQB Board of Directors.[21][not in citation given]

Black was on the program committee and a session chair for the Third World Congress on Software Quality in Munich in September 2005.[22][not in citation given] He has presented at the 2008 World Congress on Software Quality in Maryland and the 2009-2013, Software Testing Conference (Softec09 and SoftecAsia13) in Kuala Lumpur.[18][23][24]
