Rezanenko is the author of the first dissertation researches devoted to the problem of the semantic and graphic system of Chinese hieroglyphic writing in the USSR.

Biography[edit]

Rezanenko Volodymyr Fedorovych is an outstanding Ukrainian orientalist, an expert in Japanese studies, doctor of philological sciences, professor; specialist in hieroglyphic writing and the Japanese language. Thesis (Doctor of Philological Sciences): "Formal-Content Relationship between the Elements of Modern Hieroglyphic Writing".

He is the editor-in-chief of the scientific journal "Ukrainian Oriental Studies", the head of the scientific school "Japanese Society: Origin-History-Present" and "Confucius School".

The Ukrainian Association for Business Cooperation with Japan in science and technology (UNITI) was founded on the initiative of V. Rezanenko.  It was the first public organization, which was aimed to develop Ukrainian-Japanese relations.  The members of this organization were the leading scientific research institutes of the Academy of Sciences, higher educational institutions and well-known scientists and technicians.

Due to the professor Rezanenko Ukrainian-Japanese contacts between scientists were established, particularly with Osaka University, Kyoto University, Tokyo Technological Institute, Ibaraki University, Nagoya University, Gunma University, Niigata University, and others. Under the leadership of professor Rezanenko, the first scientific conferences on Japanese studies were held in Ukraine.

In 2018 he got an award from the Emperor of Japan – "The Order of the Rising Sun".

Main ideas[edit]

In his research Rezanenko considers the Taoist ideas and principles as fundamental in formation of Chinese ideography. He tries to reveal semantic connections between graphemes of ideograms and graphic elements of the Tao circle as a model of the Universe in the Chinese ontology.

In his works V. Rezanenko shows the comparison of 14 simple graphic elements of Chinese ideograms with graphic elements (constructs) of the Tao circle which are highlighting the complexity and interrelationship between these objects. The author establishes that the first and second ones have similar graphics and semantics. The similarity of semantics lies in the following: both hieroglyphic graphemes as well as graphic constructs of the Tao Circle are carriers of the Yin-Yang/Yang-Yin circulating energy properties of Things and Phenomena, which is confirmed by the results of his study based on the materials of the Shuowen Dictionary.

14 hieroglyphic graphemes[edit]

He presents 14 hieroglyphic graphemes with the analogues of graphic elements-constructs of the Tao Circle, behind which there are Yin-Yang processes of vital activity of all Things (origin → generation → formation → completion of a life cycle) → beginning of a new cycle, etc. That is, such life processes of Things and, accordingly, Man can be simulated with the help of 14 hieroglyphic graphemes as analogues of the Tao Circle constructs and five primary elements of Nature.

Rezanenko insists that Chinese ideography, is a unique mean of preserving and transmitting information related to the culture of China and is a highly effective linguistic mean for solving the problem of adequate perception and understanding of the Chinese written text at any level of its remoteness of and complexity; such view also gives an opportunity to use hieroglyphic graphics and hieroglyphs themselves to simulate  processes, natural phenomena that lie behind semantic and graphic constructs of  ideograms of the Chinese written language.

The author singles out 14 basic strokes, hieroglyphic graphemes as elements of the graphic system of the Chinese Kaishu writing style and analyze them as cursors-markers that track quantitative and qualitative dynamics of Things/Phenomena in many/infinite-dimensional space, similar to graphic constructs of the Tao Circle, which function as the Yin-Yang processes of the life of all things. This means that it is possible to model such processes with the help of ideographic codes, to which V. Rezanenko refers 14 graphemes of Chinese hieroglyphic written language.

The Tao Circle[edit]

In his article “The Tao Circle as a model of semantic and graphic structuring  of the Kaishu style  hieroglyphs” Rezanenko refers to the idea that the scheme of the Universe in religious and philosophical teachings of ancient China was represented by a combination of two circles and a square.

The outer Circle symbolizes the Human macrocosm; the Square is a symbol of the World of Things and Phenomena and, accordingly, a symbol of any Thing or Phenomenon; the inner Circle is a symbol of the Human microcosm. It is also known, that the Taoist model of the Universe is a Tao Circle (太 極), in which the Square symbolizes the Earth and, accordingly, everything that exists (things, phenomena), and the Circle is a symbol of the Heaven. According to Taoism, the actualization of Things/Phenomena is carried out through Yin-Yang which in their turn are a manifestation of the Tao as a source of generation of all things. Thus, the graphemes (the simple elements) of the ideograms of Chinese written language (the Kaishu style) and motivated by them ideas could be used to build the Tao Circle as a model of rhythmic states of Yin-Yang interaction (according to the Taoist conception of the Universe).
