Sonny Kwaku Bedwei, professionally known as Rhymesonny, is a Ghanaian poet and spoken word artist.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

His career started in 2011, with the creation of the People of Equal Thoughts and Spirits (P.O.E.T.S), which was a spoken word collective to lead the renaissance of spoken word in Ghana.[1][2] This platform led to the creation of Alewa Poetry festival and featured Mutombo Da Poet, Chief Moomen, Kwame Write and Poetra Ama Asantewaa.[3]

In 2012, he directed the creation of Vocal Portraits, a joint spoken-word album touching on love and socio-economic issues and featured 17 tracks from different poets from Ghana.[citation needed]

In 2016, Rhymesonny performed at the Lagos International Poetry Festival,[4] alongside 35 other poets and spoken word artists from Africa and across the world.[citation needed] He was featured on the "African Poetic Exchange" documentary by the BBC Africa Business Report.[5]

In 2018, he hosted another spoken word festival "Lyrical Dexterity"[6] and released his first spoken word album, Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T)[citation needed] which included My CV of Sin.[7] He recorded the Intro for Ajeezay's Evolution EP[citation needed] in 2020. That year, his piece "Words In Flight" was featured in the Fly Africa Magazine.[8]

In 2022, he was featured in the World Bank's Ghana Speaks on Climate Change campaign[9] created to turn climate challenges into opportunities for resilient and sustainable growth.[10] He was also selected as a judge on the Youth Act on Edu Spoken Word Poetry Competition organized by the World Bank.[11]

As reported by festival attendees, Rhymesonny was well-received and highly regarded for his performance at the Land of Spirits Festival.[citation needed]

Awards and Recognitions[edit]

He was nominated in the Best Poetry/Spoken Word Act of the Year and Best Poetic / Spoken Word Album / EP OTY at the 2019 Comedy and Poetry Awards[citation needed] and won both awards.[citation needed] He also won the Spoken Word act of the year in 2021.[12]
