Richa Bhattacharya (born 24 May 1977) is an Indian television actress known for her portrayal of Manjula Kumar in Aap Ke Aa Jane Se.
Early life, parents, education
Richa has a rich cultural background and exposure to many places because her father was an IAS (Indian Administrative Services) officer and was in a transferable job. She changed 9 schools in 12 years. She even stayed for three years in the U.S. in Atlanta, Georgia. She had many different friends from a varied background and this honed her early experiences. She completed her graduation in English Literature from GCG in Punjab. She also has a theatre background as her father loved theatre and he had a theatre group Yavnika and staged plays wherever he was posted. Her love of theatre and acting stems from her childhood. This amateur theatre usually performed plays attended by army professionals since her father was associated with the army (Defence). Her love for acting then led her to join the NSD (National School of Drama) to refine her acting talent and skills. During her time there, she met and fell in love with Dibyendu Bhattacharya and subsequently married. She is also professionally qualified with a Masters in Business Administration from Punjab Technical University. After marriage, she worked out of Pune, but Mumbai, where there were more opportunities for making a living and a name, beckoned. She is currently living in Mumbai.
Career
Theatre Her early theatrical career included being a secretary at Yavnika Theatre Group, Chandigarh. She also acted in classic and experimental plays including
Beewion ka Madarsa, Kauwa Chala Hans ki Chaal, An Inspector Calls, Andhonka Haathi, Aarakt Shan, Cherry Orchard, Three Sisters, Macbeth, Buri Phasi Shanti Bai, Happy Days, Shila Shringaar, Shakuntalaki Anguthi, Swapnakatha.
Television
She got her breakthrough with the serial Sach (citation needed) broadcast on Doordarshan. She went on to act in different serials with Balaji Telefilms. These included Kammal broadcast on Zee TV, Kesar broadcast on Star Plus, and Kehna Hai Kuch Mujhko broadcast on Sony TV. She also had roles in Ssshhh….Koi Hai (Star Plus), Amanat Season 2 (Zee), Meher (DD1), Raaz Ki Ek Baat (DD1), Mere Humsafar (DD1), Yeh Public Hai Sab Janti Hai (SAB). Richa also acted in other shows that were aired on Doordarshan in the early 2000s. These included Amanat and Astitva … Ek Prem Kahani on Zee. In some, she was a regular, while in others she was in some episodes. A few years ago she appeared in shows including Kahani Hamari…, Dil Dosti, Deewanepan Ki (&TV) and, more recently, Aap Ke Ajane Se where she played the role of Manjula.
Films
While being busy with television, Richa also did some roles in films including Maqbool, Dhoop, Mangal Pandey and U Me Aur Hum.
Other work
In 2004 she took a sabbatical from acting to have her son, Shaurya. As he grew up, she re-started her career by teaching acting at an institute called Kreating Charakters. She worked there for four years.
Around the same time, she and her husband also held acting workshops for children, adults and also at MBA institutes.
