Richard Abraham Zoumalan[1] MD, F.A.C.S.,[2] FPRS,[3] is an American plastic surgeon,[4] recognized for his role and contribution to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery with numerous books and publications on different platforms.[5][6][7][8][9][10] He is also known for furthering developments in facial plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery.[11] Zoumalan is in private practice specializing in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and has a practice office in Beverly Hills.[12][13][14] He is the author of the rhinoplasty encyclopedia Rhinopedia,[15][16] founder of Natural Structure Rhinoplasty,[17] and the founder and chairman of the nonprofit Anti-Bullying foundation A Change of F.A.C.E. organization.[18]

Education and career[edit]

Zoumalan attended University of California, Los Angeles where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, prior to graduating from it with BS in physiologic sciences. He then attended Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine from which he got his M.D. degree. Following graduation, he served surgical internship at the Department of Surgery of NYU Langone Medical Center and then received residency training at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of Bellevue, Lenox Hill, and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospitals.[19]

Zoumalan first position was with the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington where he specialized in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. He then joined Cedars-Sinai Medical Center as attending faculty before becoming associate professor and clinical instructor at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, UCLA.[3] He frequently works alongside his brother Oculoplastic specialist Christopher Zoumalan and with dermatologists and plastic surgeons at a Beverly Hills Surgical Center.[20][12]

Zoumalan specializes in rhinoplasty, facelifts and septoplasty surgery.[21][22][23][24] Zoumalan has advanced the field of rhinoplasty by increasing the level of customization.[25] He and Minas Constantinides performed the research which objectively measured the effect of septorhinoplasty on breathing using acoustic rhinometry.[26] He furthered this research with Craig Murakami using suction assisted measurements of nasal valve stability before and after rhinoplasty in the operating room. He has assisted the development of understanding the role of specialized cartilage grafts in rhinoplasty.[27] Zoumalan was the first to publish a peer-reviewed medical journal article about the existence of MRSA in Facelift Surgery and developed a protocol of how to treat MRSA infections in Facial Plastic Surgery which is now used by surgeons around the world.[28][29] He helped developed research into determining the strength of suspension techniques in facelift surgery.[30]

Zoumalan is also a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, American Academy of Otolaryngology, American Rhinologic Society, American Academy of Otolaryngologic Allergy, and American Board of Medical Specialties. Zoumalan also serves as an editor of the Journal of Otology.[31]
