The season will consist of 10 episodes.[7] Rob Schrab will also write an episode about Morty and his new girlfriend.[8]

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

Digital Spy revealed that the season would have more of a continuity than the rest of the series, not unlike season three, when Rick was put into an alien prison. Rick and Morty writer Scott Marder announced that "there's epic canon in season five coming" and that season four's Space Beth is set to be a major character in the season in 2020 at a virtual Adult Swim festival.[9] As of late October 2020, episodes were "pretty far along on [their] route to Adult Swim."[10]

A promotional animatic of Morty carrying a seemingly dead Rick across an alien planet was released in November 2020.[4] Other animatics, including one that appears to be from the same episode as Rick is in the same condition he is in in the first picture, have been released as well.[10] A final animatic shows Morty confessing his feelings for Jessica as their spaceship crashes into the ocean. Once it does, Rick's long-time nemesis Dr. Nimbus greets them.[11] Sixth and seventh seasons have been confirmed to already be in development.

The show will consist of the next 10 out of 70 episodes originally ordered by Adult Swim in May 2018 after the premiere of the third season.[12]

Casting[edit]

Along with the seasons' announcement, regulars Justin Roiland, Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke were confirmed to return as the Smith family,[1] with other characters including new addition to the cast, Dr. Nimbus.[4] In January 2021, it was revealed that series creator Dan Harmon and Kari Wahlgren, a recurring voice in the series, would return to reprise their roles of Birdperson, Rick's old friend turned enemy after being reprogrammed by Tammy Gueterman and Jessica, Morty's crush throughout the show, respectively.[3]

Space Beth, a popular character from the finale of the previous season, voiced by Chalke, has the possibility to return for the season.[9]

Writing[edit]

In October 2020, show creator Dan Harmon revealed that one of the episodes, written by Rob Schrab, in the upcoming season will be about Morty's relationship with a woman who isn't Jessica, and said that Morty "really feels heartache on a level a man his age shouldn’t… my Emmy is going to that one." Schrab's writing for the episode was "very tender." Harmon also noted that production was happening ahead of schedule.[8] Jeff Loveness, who wrote multiple episodes in season four, has been confirmed to be returning to write his last episodes for the series, including the season premiere.[13] The season will also delve deeper into Rick and Jerry's relationship.[14]

Release[edit]

The season will premiere on June 20, 2021.[15] Justin Roiland, who voices the two main characters, said that he would like to air one episode a month, so as to lengthen the time that the show is on the air.[16] He reiterated this in March 2021. Roiland also claimed that the wait between all the rest of the seasons would "never be [as] long again" as they were between many of the previous seasons.[17] In May 2020, Inverse predicted that it was "possible" that the season could premiere in late 2020, but would most likely begin airing in May 2021.[16]
