Khaled Salah El-Din Taha (Arabic: خالد صلاح الدين طه; born January 1, 1967), also known as Rico, is an Egyptian singer and actor[1]. He is often described having a "unique acting and singing style" in songs such as "Shubra" (Arabic: شبرا).
Early Life[edit]
Rico was born in Abdeen (Cairo) (Arabic: عبدين) Egypt, but originates from Kuwait[2] . During his childhood, his mother had brought him to see the movie "Searching for a Scandal" (Trakt), in which there was a character named Rico played by Nagy Angro (Arabic: ناجي أنجلو). After the film, Khaled Salah El-Din Taha began to imitate the character. People started calling him Rico, and the nickname stuck.[3]
Musical Career[edit]
In 1999, Rico had joined Mohamed Mounir's band as a drummer.[4] A couple years later, Rico split off to sing independently. He presented several works that distinguished his popular color in singing. His fame was mostly credited to his song "Shubra" (Arabic: شبرا)[5], which appeared in the movie "The Magician"[6]. He took part in many advertisements, such as the ones with the Turkish tire company XceeD, and a gift music video for Dr. Ahmed Shafy (Arabic: دكتور أحمد عبد الشافي), during the 2020 House of Representatives elections in Egypt. Starting in 2020, Rico has had a resurgence in song making. He started with the song, Away Criminal (Arabic: مجرم اوى), he had collaborated with other artists for two more songs in 2021, then in 2022 he was able to bring out another song collaborating with two other artists[7][8].
Controversy[edit]
In 2015, Rico was arrested for possessing 5 grams of Heroin in a friends apartment, along with 5 other people. After 3 days, he left jail on bail. The case was dismissed as Rico was declared not-guilty This altercation was severe in damaging his reputation, despite his best efforts[9]. After this point, Rico had slowed down in his effort of making songs.
In 2019, Rico had been accused of defrauding Hassan Muhammad (Arabic: حسن محمد) out of 25,000 Egyptian Pounds. Hassan had paid for Rico to perform on October 26, but Rico had taken the money and did not show up. Later Waheed Al-Kilani (Arabic: وحيد الكيلاني), an attorney on Hassan's behalf, had later set up a lawsuit before the Abdeen Misdemeanor Court (Arabic: محكمة جنح عابدين). The court had found Rico guilty of defrauding Hassan. Waheed later noted that Rico had used a fraudulent method to take Hassan's money.[10]
Acting Career[edit]
Rico was well known for his "energetic and comedic" acting style[11]. Rico tends to play the role of a comedic side character in many of his movies. Often integrating his songs into these movies. After the drug scandal, Rico had started organizing plays that involve the Alexandrian youth.[12] In 2020, Rico had been participating in a Ramadan drama series called, Children of Imbaba (Arabic: ولاد إمبابة)[13].
Regardless of the date, Rico has only 2 days to finish the movie "The Guilty Father".[14][15][16][17][18][19][12][20]
