Rifat Hasan (Bengali: āϰāĻŋāĻĢāĻžāϤ āĻšāĻžāϏāĻžāύ; born 17 January 1980[1]) is a Bangladeshi poet, political analyst and intellectual.[2][3][4] He is the author of Shomporko, Bondhutto O Rajniti, a nonfiction book published in 2014, that is well-known and criticised for its idea of friendship (Bengali: āĻŦāĻ¨ā§āϧ⧁āĻ¤ā§āĻŦ) and critique of modern politics, and the complexities of political practices in Bangladesh after independence.[5][6] His insights and analyses of Bangladeshi politics and society have a considerable impact on young writers and thinkers in Bangladesh.[5]

Political views and understandings

Rifat has a critical position in understanding power in modern discourse and the states it creates, as well as citizenship and identity politics. He believes in the autonomy and tolerance of societies. He also desires a revolutionary shift in human relations within political paradigms, as well as the rise of justice and equality.[4]

In 2008, Rifat stated that the problem of religious bigots destroying the Lalon sculpture[7][8] in Bangladesh's capital city was due to a lack of citizen consent, rather than a case of nuisance or violence.[9][10] In 2013, Rifat's position was among the first to criticise the widespread 2013 Shahbag protests, as he called the movement fascist in nature and against the idea of justice. [11]

Rifat also condemned the 2013 Motijheel massacre[12][13] by Bangladesh's joint armed forces at the controversial[14][15] Shapla Square protests organized by madrasha student's Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh as a violation of human dignity, saying, "Manush shomporker obomanona". (Bengali: āĻŽāĻžāύ⧁āώ āϏāĻŽā§āĻĒāĻ°ā§āϕ⧇āϰ āĻ…āĻŦāĻŽāĻžāύāύāĻž)

Here Rifat discussed the importance of rethinking (Bengali: āĻĒ⧁āύāĻ°ā§āĻŦāĻŋāĻŦ⧇āϚāύāĻž) the concept of man and relations within the context of modern society and state with reference to Ibn Khaldun's Asabiyyah.[16][17]

In a March 2014 interview with Shamprotik, he criticizes Shahbag protesters for limiting the spaces of liberal standpoint and talk in society, as well as for failing to make an objective critique of the war crimes tribunal held under the then sheikh hasina led regime, which, to Rifat, created a point of no return in Bangladeshi politics and society from 2013 to present period of time.[18]

Criticism

Several critics harshly criticised Rifat in 2008 for supporting the demolition of the Lalon sculpture in the capital of Bangladesh by religious bigots.[19][20] They characterized Rifat's position on the Lalon sculpture's demolition as less critical of Islamic mollas and religious bigots and more critical of the sculpture itself and progressive left activists on this point.[19]

Op-ed

Rifat authored Op-ed pieces for bdnews24.com from early 2010 to late 2011, and readers responded to them with both praise and criticism. The Op-eds discussed issues like the idea of justice, consent, manufacturing of the media, religion, the feminist position in modern states, constitutional debates of Bangladesh and how history should not be treated as a legal issue.
