Rigel Robinson (born June 21, 1996) is an American politician, community organizer, and political activist, who will begin serving on the Berkeley City Council in December 2018.[1][2] A member of the Democratic Party, he will represent the 7th district, an area that includes the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.[3] He is the youngest person to be elected to office in Berkeley.[4]

Early life and education[edit]

Robinson was born in St. Louis, Missouri. From 2014 to 2018, Robinson attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as the ASUC External Affairs Vice President and received a political science degree.[5] He campaigned to include an additional $356.9 million investment for education initiatives in the University of California system in the 2018 California state budget.[6][7] He later became the University Affairs Chair of the University of California Student Association.

During college, he was an intern in the press office of California Governor Jerry Brown and at the U.S. Department of Education for Secretary John B. King Jr.

2018 Berkeley City Council campaign[edit]

Robinson has not held elected office. He announced his candidacy on April 26, 2018.[8] He defeated two opponents in the general election on November 6, 2018.[9]

Political positions[edit]

Robinson calls for building more housing next to the UC Berkeley campus.[10] He has called for more affordable housing in the past, including at Berkeley City Council meetings.[5] Robinson calls for appointing students to city offices and integrating students into the decision-making process. Robinson supports decriminalizing homelessness, by creating sanctioned encampments where residents can remain without uprooting.[10] Along with student representation, Robinson’s campaign platforms included fighting for affordable housing, increasing community safety, decriminalizing homelessness, combating climate change and revitalizing Telegraph Avenue.[9]
