Ripples & Waves: A Queer Retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid is a 2019 American fantasy romance novel by L.A. Witt. It is a retelling of the fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen set in modern-day Maine and with the protagonists as LGBT men.

Plot[edit]

The story is narrated from the perspective of both protagonists. Colin Everroad is a gay man who is the son of two famous homophobes and works at a seafood restaurant. After his lobster boat capsizes during a violent storm after being sabotaged by a homophobe named West Martin and his gang of homophobic bullies, he is rescued by a bisexual merman prince named Lir. While in the hospital, he is told by his lesbian friend Joan that he was rescued by one of the merfolk, human-fish hybrids who can practice magic. Joan suggests summoning him by putting his hand on the surface of the deep ocean and call his name to find out why he was saved as it is rare and forbidden for merfolk to save an adult. After summoning and befriending him, they both meet and have conversations almost every day. The two eventually fall in love with each other and wish to be with each other. Lir makes a deal with a sea witch in order to see Colin as the sea queen forbade him from visiting the surface. The witch gives him two potions: one to turn him human temporarily for three days and one to turn him back to merfolk form. The witch also says that he will be mute when in human form. When Lir becomes human and mute, he is taken in by Colin and they spend time together and have sex. Colin decides not to introduce Lir to his parents or show him around Maine as he does not want to expose Lir to homophobia. Soon, Colin and Lir begin to wish to be with each other forever. On the day of the last and third day, Colin plans on telling Lir he loves him so much that he will let him go back to the ocean as a merman as he does not want Lir to live in silence forever. Before sunset, Colin tells Lir that he loves him but wants him to be happy and safe as a merman. Lir accepts and drinks the potion to turn him back into a merman. Lir and Colin say goodbye and Lir departs to the sea kingdom. At the sea kingdom, Lir is forbidden to ever leave again and Colin starts to be reminded of Lir constantly. After talking to Lir about Colin, Caspian visits Colin and convinces him to be with Lir forever and gives him a potion that will turn him into a merman permanently. After saying goodbye to Joan, Lir drinks the potion and becomes a merman forever and marries Lir.
