Rita Darrow

Rita Darrow is an American politician from Summit County, Ohio. She is the President of the Summit County Council and represents District 1. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life and career

Darrow has lived in Summit County for more than 20 years.[1] She resides in Macedonia, Ohio, and is active in her parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe.[1] Her professional background includes work as an office manager in property management and as a freight broker in transportation.[1]

Political career

Macedonia City Council (2012–2015)

Darrow served on the Macedonia City Council from 2012 to 2015 and was Council President in 2015.[1] During her tenure the council passed over 300 legislative items, more than 90% unanimously.[2] She supported debt reduction, lower tax rates, and helped secure over $200 million in infrastructure and development funding.[1]

Summit County Council (2020–present)

In 2020, Darrow was elected to represent District 1 on the Summit County Council.[1] District 1 includes the cities of Macedonia and Twinsburg; the villages of Northfield, Peninsula, Reminderville, Richfield; and the townships of Boston, Northfield Center, Richfield, Sagamore Hills, and Twinsburg.[1]

On February 12, 2024, she was selected by fellow council members as Council President, replacing Veronica Sims, who joined the Ohio House of Representatives.[3]

In January 2025, Darrow was re-elected by council to serve as President for the legislative term, with Erin Dickinson as Vice President.[4]

Elections

2024 Summit County Council, District 1

In the November 5, 2024 general election, Darrow was re-elected to Summit County Council District 1.[5]

  • Rita Darrow (D): 20,972 votes (56.5%)
  • Yulia Gray (R): 16,136 votes (43.5%)

She was profiled in local voter guides during the campaign, which highlighted her positions on housing, infrastructure, and economic development.[6][7]

2022 Ohio House of Representatives, District 31

In 2022, Darrow ran for the Ohio House of Representatives (District 31) against incumbent Bill Roemer.[8]

  • Bill Roemer (R): 28,948 votes (52.1%)
  • Rita Darrow (D): 26,643 votes (47.9%)

Political positions

Darrow emphasizes bipartisan collaboration, infrastructure investment, housing stability, and fiscal accountability.[9] She has advocated for regional job growth, first responder support, and protection of green spaces.[10]

Community involvement

She is active in the Federated Democratic Women of Summit County, serving as Third Vice President.[11]
