Robert Douglas Morgan (born 21 July 1985) is an American bassist, music director, writer, and podcast host. He is best known for his work as bassist and music director of the electronic band Owl City.[1]

Early life[edit]

Robert Douglas Morgan, the oldest child of Kletus and Beth Morgan, was born on a US Military base in Jacksonville, Florida on 21 July 1985. His father was in the United States Navy and his mother was a nurse.

At the age of 5, Morgan’s family moved back to Nebraska where he grew up and started playing bass at the age of 14.[1]

Musical career[edit]

After high school, Morgan moved to Minneapolis, MN to study music performance under Ian Allison[2] at North Central University and toured throughout the United States playing bass for the school's prestigious touring band, “One Accord.”

After four years of undergraduate study in Music Performance, Morgan left North Central University to play bass on the road with Gotee Recording artist Jeff Deyo. In a 2018 interview, Morgan said, “The thing about Jeff Deyo is that he's the same on stage and off. It's my time with him that transformed me from a guy who plays bass into a professional touring musician. He's a master at his craft and demanded the same excellence from the guys playing with him... Yeah, Jeff really taught us what it meant to show up every night and perform on the highest level.”[3]

In 2014, Morgan was brought on to play synth bass, electric bass, music director and background vocals for the electronic band Owl City.[1]

The Podcast[edit]

"I'm convinced that everyone we meet has a compelling story and that belief has permanently affixed within me an insatiable curiosity about life, people and the creative process."

—Rob Morgan[4]

In the spring of 2017, after returning from a tour throughout Asia with Owl City Morgan released his Podcast, “Rob Morgan Is A Curious Person.” The first episode, “How the hell did we end up here?” (Feat. Dawnl Ojeda) was released on May 2nd for free. Since then, the show has become highly successful, amassing a worldwide audience.[1]

On his podcast, Morgan sits down with guests on location,[5] over drinks, with inspiring guests, all over the world to find out “who they are, and what he can learn from them.”
