Rob Ridder was a fictional footballer who appeared in the comic strips of Rob van de Rovers by Oberon, the Dutch version the British boys' comic Roy of the Rovers, during the 1970s, 80s and 90s.
He was a forward, playing as player-managerfor Randstad Rovers , FC Haven and Netherlands. The strip first appeared in in 1978 and continued for 14 years until 1992.
The character is a fondly remembered childhood memory for several generations of Dutch and Belgian men. He was also known in the beginning as Steven Nieland.
Background and plot
The series was a Dutch translation of the legendary British football comic Roy of the Rovers. In the original UK version, Rob Ridder is named Roy Race, and the team is Melchester Rovers.
The strip follows the dramatic life of Rob Ridder, who possesses a legendary shooting technique. The stories follow his intense matches alongside heavy off-pitch drama, including transfers, injuries, kidnapping plots, and even a infamous team bus crash. During a dramatic phase in the early 1980s, Rob briefly left his beloved club after a massive falling out with the board of directors. He signed with this rival club before inevitably returning home to Randstad Rovers.
In the Netherlands and Flanders, the albums were famously published by Oberon starting in 1980. Before getting his definitive name, the character briefly debuted in earlier Dutch magazines under the name Steven Nieland.
