In 1981 (The Archrivals, album 3) Rovers are grappling with a massive wave of injuries, with key players like Tabak and Gilles sidelined when they play an UEFA Cup match against Icelandic Heklavik.[1] They are knocked out but they win the 1980-81 league. After winning the 1980-81 Eredividie league, the Randstad Rovers depart for Heraklion on Crete for a holiday combined with friendly matches (Danger in Crete, album 4). During an informal training session on the beach, the Haarlem players who are also touring in Crete challenge the Rovers, leading to a first showdown under the Greek sun.[2]

In 1982 Randstad Rovers are in crisis following the sale of star player Gilles and their elimination from the Dutch Cup. The team are relegated at the end of the season. However, in 1983 the team returns to Eredivisie. In 1984, Rob Ridder considers a sensational move to FC Haven after chairman Jaap Evenhuis offers him a multi-million budget for new players and in 1985 Rob Ridder has made up his mind and is transferring to FC Haven, after a multi-million offer from chairman Jaap Evenhuis promises him full sporting control.

The club desperately needs Ridder who finally returns in 1986. The [[Randstad Rovers] have climbed the ranks in the race for the national Dutch cup following a series of victories, while the feud between Rob and top scorer Robbie de Vries has been settled. In the quarter-finals, a tough confrontation awaits against F.C. Hoogeveen, who field the tough-as-nails new signing Karl Gruber. Gruber, also known as the “Cannon of Dortmund,” directs his physical play directly at Rob from the kick-off to take him out of the game.[3]

In 1987 In preparation for the new season, player-coach Rob Ridder strengthens the Randstad Rovers squad with goalkeeper Bert Wilton and striker Evert “Zoef” de Haas. While the seasoned newcomers immediately make their mark on the game, friction arises on the training pitch due to Rob’s tough approach towards Sjaak Zwaag. The tensions between them are put to the test during a fierce friendly match in which De Haas is forced off injured following a spectacular tackle.

In 1988 Randstad Rovers are preparing for the cup Final against Den Bosch, while Rob Ridder faces a dilemma of luxury due to the return of midfielder Sjaak Zwaag. Although goalkeeper Bert Wilton is training for a record twelve matches without conceding a goal, there is unrest regarding the starting positions of established names. During the Final, the team comes under heavy pressure, and Wilton concedes his first goal in ages early on. Rob attempts to turn the tide with a rousing pep talk but watches as his team is tactically outplayed by the fiercely playing opponent.

In 1988 Rovers tour middle east state Basran. Following a military coup in Basran, the Randstad Rovers are forcibly transferred to the heavily guarded El Kadir barracks. While a Dutch commando unit prepares a rescue operation, the players are forced to endure physical violence and humiliation from the rebels.

In 1989 After a convincing season opener against the Zebras, the revamped Randstad Rovers squad suffers a humiliating defeat against Victoria. In the run-up to the match against Tubantia, the Rovers are grappling with fierce internal squabbles and conflicts between the players and the technical staff. After a tumultuous start to the season, Randstad Rovers squad is grappling with internal conflicts and personal issues within the technical leadership. Moreover, during the crucial league match against Tubantia, the feud between assistant coach Cees Klein and his son Koen Klein flares up again. On the pitch, tension runs high due to the opponent's uncollegial play, with Koen Klein forced to abandon the match dizzy after a hard collision. Despite the grim atmosphere in the stands and the mutual irritations, the Rovers attempt to turn a 1-1 draw into a victory.

In 1990 In the battle for the national Cup, the Randstad Rovers face De Spartaan, a club notorious for its violent supporters. Thanks to the introduction of a special pass system, things remain calm in the stands, but on the pitch, the action is rough right from the kick-off. Rob Ridder is extra motivated to win after a millionaire promised a reward of one million guilders for a cup victory. Despite an early deficit and injuries, Rob attempts to break through De Spartaan's defense with a spectacular solo run to force the equalizer.

In 1990 The board signs the strong midfielder Barend “Pancho” Muller as a new player to strengthen the injury-stricken squad. Although Rob Ridder struggles with Muller’s headstrong behavior, the new signing immediately makes a crushing impression with a goal in the match against the Stormvogels. However, tensions between the two stars rise when Muller openly ignores Rob’s tactical instructions on the pitch. As the team prepares for the Cup final, Rob questions whether he should include the dominant Muller in the starting lineup for the battle for the million.

In 1992 After a tough season, Rob Ridder is looking forward to a well-deserved cruise with his family, but an unexpected phone call throws a spanner in the works. The youth team coach has fallen off a ladder and broken his ankle, meaning a replacement is urgently needed for a tournament in Japan. Although his wife Penny and the children initially protest, Rob decides to take on the task, and the group travels to Tokyo for a youth tournament.
