Rob Rombout (born 8 July 1953) is a Dutch documentary filmmaker, lecturer, and course director.[5] He is a co-founder of the DocNomads international master’s programme in documentary filmmaking and has taught at institutions worldwide.[6] His films have been broadcast internationally and received awards at major festivals.
Early life and education
Rob Rombout was born in Amsterdam in 1953.[1] He moved to Brussels in 1975, where he began his career in documentary cinema and education.[2]
Career
Since 1988 he has taught directing at Sint Lukas (LUCA) in Brussels and has been a professor at INSAS, RITS, Lusofona (Lisbon), Paris 8 and Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg.
Documentary filmmaking
Rombout has directed and co-directed over a dozen documentaries since the 1980s.[1] His notable works include:
- Amsterdam via Amsterdam (1996–2004), a voyage from the Dutch capital to its eponymous islands, winner of three U.S. festival awards.[1]
- Amsterdam Stories USA (2012), a six-hour road-movie tracing fifteen American towns named Amsterdam, co-directed with Rogier van Eck.[7]
- On the Track of Robert van Gulik (2016), an 88-minute portrait of the Dutch Sinologist and author, Robert van Gulik exploring van Gulik’s legacy across five continents.[4]
Academic and teaching roles
From 2012 to 2018, Rombout served as course director at the LUCA School of Arts in Brussels for the DocNomads programme.[3] He has lectured and led workshops at:

Rombout was vice-president of the Belgian committee of the Société Civile des Auteurs Multimédia (SCAM) for ten years and serves on advisory boards for various film and arts institutions.[2]
