Robert Chu (Chinese: 朱建全; pinyin: Zhu̅ Jiànqua̒n; born 1963) is an American lawyer, legal scholar, and economic and strategy advisor currently residing in Melbourne, Australia.

Chu holds degrees in Engineering and Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a law degree from Harvard Law School. He began his legal career as a professor at Rutgers Law School (Newark). More recently, he was Managing Partner of Sullivan & Cromwell’s Australia Practice, covering the U.S. law firm’s Melbourne and Sydney offices, and is currently Managing Partner at Grundrisse Group.

Early life and education[edit]

Robert Chu was born in 1963 in Taipei, Taiwan. After finishing second grade in Taipei, Chu emigrated from the Republic of China to the United States with his family in 1972. At age seventeen, Chu decided to forgo the final year of high school in order to begin studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At MIT, Chu simultaneously earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in computer science and electrical engineering with a concentration in political science. After graduating from MIT, Chu worked as Program Officer at Haymarket People’s Fund in Boston before resuming studies at Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, Chu served as a research assistant to eminent international law scholar David Kennedy. After graduating cum laude from Harvard Law School, Chu was admitted to the Bar of the State of New York. Chu remained at Harvard Law School, working in both research and advisory capacities as Senior Fellow until 1996.

Career[edit]

After Harvard, Chu taught contracts and international business transactions law as Associate Professor at Rutgers Law School in Newark from 1996 to 1999. Chu left Rutgers in 1999 to accept a position as Associate with the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell. As an associate, Chu practiced law in Sullivan & Cromwell’s New York and Hong Kong offices, from where he counseled companies and financial institutions in the areas of mergers & acquisitions and capital markets.[1] Chu was made a partner with Sullivan & Cromwell in 2007[2], after which he managed the firm’s practices, first in Beijing, China, then in Melbourne and Sydney in Australia. During his tenure as Partner, Chu advised Australian, Chinese, and U.S. companies on some of the largest corporate financings and mergers in the Commonwealth’s history, as well as numerous strategic transactions outside of Australia. Chu remained a partner with the firm until late 2018. Chu has represented a wide range of clients in his career, including industrial and technological concerns, as well as numerous major financial institutions. Clients Chu has advised include Technicolor SA[3], Allianz SE[4], ANZ New Zealand (Int’l) Limited (ANZNIL), National Australia Bank Limited, Bank of New Zealand, BHP Billiton Limited, QR National (now known as Aurizon), Queensland Treasury Corporation, St Barbara Limited, Telstra Corporation[5][6], Woodside Petroleum, Shanda Games Limited[7], KongZhong Corporation, China Digital TV Holding Co., Ltd., Sohu.com, DP World (formerly known as Dubai Ports International)[8], R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., Thomson S.A., Bank of China[9][10], China Investment Corporation, China Telecom, Ek Chor China Motorcycle Co. Ltd., Ping An Insurance, Goldman Sachs[11], Nomura Holdings, Tata Motors Limited, among others.[1] Chu is currently Managing Partner at Grundrisse Group, where he advises individuals and corporations of complex cross-border transactions, the application of technology to professional services, the cultivation of talent, as well as other strategic matters.

Recognition[edit]

Chu has been recognized as a leading lawyer for equity capital markets and mergers and acquisitions by no fewer than five professional publications, including The Best Lawyers in Australia and The International Who’s Who of Capital Markets Lawyers.[12] Chambers Asia has ranked Chu as a Band 1 (highest tier) lawyer for “Capital Markets: US Law” in Australia by Chambers Asia.[1]

Research and Scholarship[edit]

In addition to the practice of law, Chu has continued his contribution to legal research and scholarship since entering the profession, presenting his findings at academic institutions and conferences in Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia.[13] Most recently, Chu participates as faculty and advisor at the Harvard Law School’s Institute for Global Law and Policy, and is Co-leader of the Banking and Finance Working Group at Northwestern University's Buffett Institute for Global Studies. Chu also serves as a member on the Dean's Advisory Council of the Center for Asian Legal Studies at the Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia.[14]
