Robert Kimberly
Robert P. Kimberly is an American rheumatologist, immunologist, and human geneticist. Currently the Senior Associate Dean for Special Projects, he was the founding Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science with its Partner Network, Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research, and Associate Vice President for Medicine and Biomedical Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, in the United States.[1] Kimberly is known for his work on the genetic regulation of immune function and the mechanisms that underlie autoimmune and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.[2][3]
Early life
Kimberly was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University with a baccalaureate degree before earning a baccalaureate and master’s degree from the University of Oxford in England as a Rhodes Scholar. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School.[4][5]
Academic career
Kimberly did his internship and residency in Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1996, Kimberly was a Professor of Medicine at Cornell University Medical College and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.[6]
At UAB, Kimberly’s research has examined how molecular, genetic, and immunologic factors contribute to autoimmune disease risk and progression.[7][8][9][10] He has helped characterize how variations in immune-related genes influence susceptibility to and severity of diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus[11][12], including work on the complement system, antibody receptors[13], immune cell signaling, and genetic determinants of inflammatory responses.[14][15][16][17]
In addition to the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program[18][19][20], Kimberly has led multiple collaborative projects in clinical and translational research as principal investigator and co-investigator. NIH-supported programs include the Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center (MCRC), the Rheumatic Disease Core Center (RDCC), and the Specialized Center of Research in SLE. He also led the UAB Program Project on the Genetic of Systemic Lupus and developed the Lupus End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Consortium to examine genetic contributions in lupus.[21]
