Robert Nettles

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Robert Nettles (born August 13, 1973 in Cottondale, Alabama) is a dermatologist, ocular surgeon and behavioural scientist. He is best known as the founder and inventor of Stop and ReGrow.[1], an androgenic alopecia treatment for hereditary baldness. He is also a renowned hair restoration expert, and was a pioneer in performing the Advanced High Density MICROscopic single hair transplant procedure.

Early Life[edit]

Nettles was fascinated by genetic engineering at age 16, having done his high school thesis paper on the examination of genetic inheritance patterns present within DNA. This paved the way for his studies of genetics, biology and chemistry at the University of Alabama and his eventual acceptance into the University of Alabama's School Of Medicine.

At the start of medical school, Nettles noticed that his father had become completely bald while his older brother was showing signs of thinning hair[2]. These events became the driving force for studying all facets of hair restoration, and it even became an active research project for Nettles while attending medical school

After graduating from medical school in 2000, Nettles' hair had already started thinning. At this time, it was understood that DHT was the biochemical root cause of hair loss. Nettles realized that Rogaine's primary mechanism of action was taking existing hair strands and making them thicker until DHT completely throttled hair growth.

Following the completion of 2 overseas research externships at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and Universitaatspital Zurich, Nettles completed his internship at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan, New York and obtained his physician's and surgeon's license in 2002.

Nettles' research into hair restoration was further pursued at the Eye Consultants of Atlanta in the form of a vitreo-retinal fellowship program. While enhancing his surgical techniques, Nettles studied the effect of select prostaglandin medications on rapid lash growth in glaucoma patients without the known side effects of Rogaine and Minoxidil. From this experience, Nettles had deduced the mechanism of action for a new, effective medical solution that would act as a growing agent for the hair follicle.

Nettles' next step was hands-on training with Dr. Robert Elliot, a practicing dermatologist who specialized in the hair transplant field[3]. Alongside Dr. Elliot, Nettles became proficient at dissecting and inserting single follicular units under microscopic magnification.

Stop & Regrow[edit]

Nettles realized that transplants were insufficient as a form of hair loss treatment, and developed an interest in a non-surgical solution to the cosmetic problem of hair loss.

As Nettles started working on a proprietary hair grow product, he discovered that the optimal ratio of the different types of testosterone (similar to cholesterol levels) was a major key in the eventual creation of his product. This was around the same time that he discovered precision medicine, which allowed him to further perfect the formula. With the inclusion of internal and external medications, Nettles was to simultaneously reverse hair loss while thickening hairs at the same time[4].

Stop & Regrow™ primarily works via an oral DHT blocker that prevents circulation of DHT through the blood stream, in combination with a topical solution that contains an optimized ratio of hair growth stimulant and DHT blocker. The DHT blocker prevents DHT conversion from occurring at the scalp, made possible via a personalized dose that is based on an individual's hormone levels, personal biochemistry and DNA. It avoids common side effects such as itchy scalp and reduced libido due to the elimination of overdosing[5]. According to Nettles, all ingredients in Stop & ReGrow™ are FDA-approved[6]

Combination trials began in 2008, and 2012 saw the funding of the initial public offering for Stop & Regrow™. After forming a partnership with Quest Labs in 2015 to run the specific lab tests and DNA analysis needed, Stop & ReGrow™ saw a nation-wide launch that propelled the success of the product.

Medical Philosophy[edit]

Dr. Nettles is a strong proponent of precision medicine, which allows for the rebalance of dosing medications on the basis of an individual's unique biochemistry[7]. Having personally worked with hundreds of patients in the hair loss space, Nettles rejects the idea that a medication's dose should be based solely on height and weight, as metabolism and hormone levels are not properly factored in.

With a better understanding of how to rebalance biochemistry for an individual as a consequence of an improved understanding of genetics, Nettles proposes that every human has an 'optimal' dose for the medications they take, allowing one to maximize benefits while reducing harmful side effects.
