Roberto Ribeiro Fernandes (born 4 January 1999), also known by his nickname Júnior in futsal, is a Portuguese professional futsal player. Fernandes is notable for his unique transition from a successful youth career as a table tennis player to becoming a professional athlete in futsal.
Career Highlights
Table Tennis Career (2009–2017)
Fernandes began his sporting career in table tennis, competing for G.D. São Cibrão. He was considered one of the most promising young athletes in the Vila Real district and achieved significant success at the national level.
- National Champion (2013): He won the National Pairs Championship in the cadet category, partnering with Eduardo Vieira (São Roque). Their victory came with a final score of 3-2 against Pedro Varejão and Daniel Machado.[1]
- National Champion (2009): He became the National Singles Champion in the "Iniciados" (U12) category. He also won the National Male Pairs Champion (with Bruno Correia) and the National Mixed Pairs Champion (with Alexandra Pisco) in the same year.[2]
- National Third Place (2017): He finished in third place in the Mixed Pairs Sub-21 category at the National Championships, alongside Daniela Moura.[3]
- Rivalry with Eduardo Vieira: Prior to their successful partnership, Fernandes faced Eduardo Vieira in the final of the "Torneio Cidade Vila do Conde" in 2011, where Vieira defeated him 3-1.[4]
Futsal Career (2016–present)
Fernandes transitioned from table tennis to futsal, where he plays as a winger. He has competed at a high level in the Portuguese futsal scene, known by his nickname "Júnior."

- Diogo Cão: He played for Diogo Cão from the 2017/2018 season to the 2021/2022 season, competing in the Portuguese third division.
- ADC Constantim: He moved to ADC Constantim for the 2022/2023 season, where he played for two years.
- Valpaços Futsal: For the 2024/2025 season, he signed with Valpaços Futsal, which secured promotion to the Portuguese Second Division.[5]
