Roberto Sanchez (born January 4, 1965) is an Cuban-American actor, director, writer and producer. He is known for appearing in 2 Fast 2 Furious as Roberto, Queen of the South as Big T, Chicago P.D. as Jorge Pena and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Diego Diaz.
Early Life
Roberto Sanchez was born in Havana, Cuba. He is the son of Roberto Sanchez who was the member of National Cuban Judo Team, a 6th-degree black belt. His mother, Isabel Belen Gallinat wanted the family to leave the country for better opportunities. Roberto along with his mother and older brother left for Spain in the '60s. His father was supposed to travel after them, but the the Cuban government found out and kept his father back. They took away his father's assets like car and house. Roberto stayed in Spain for more than a year. Then they left for the US.
Later, he grew up in Little Havana, Miami by his single-mother. He got to see his father again after 15 years.
At the age of 18, when Sanchez gotten out of high-school, he signed-up for the US navy. He describes, it gave his life a structure and discipline. He has competed professionally in the European League as a Naval basketball player. He was a part of the Operation Desert Storm. He served in the military for 11 years.
Career
At the end of his military career, he was a Military Police Officer. He started doing some local modeling and commercials in the Virginia Beach, VA area. He entered a national modeling competition where Sanchez won the 'Model of the Year' award at the event. He decided to complete his military commitments and pursue this new career path.
Roberto then moved to Atlanta, where he had a successful 5-year run as a professional model and commercial actor. He used to work as a Director of Security for Saint Joseph's Hospital. After over 100 fashion shows, numerous print jobs and over a dozen regional and national commercials. At he age of 39, When he was in Miami, working as a Security Officer on the train systems. He got into a fued with a passanger because he was smoking. Concurrently, Roberto receives a phone call from his agent telling him that he landed a role in 2 Fast 2 Furious. He took the leap of faith and left his job.[1]
2 Fast 2 Furious was his first audition for a film. He was auditioned by John Singleton. The initial roles Roberto was getting were the tough guy roles. His first audition in Los Angeles was for a show called 'The District'.
Sanchez has wrote a story for a feature film 72 Hours which stars Cam Gigandet and Sam Trammel. Roberto got a protagonist role in an independent film, Lake Los Angeles directed by Mike Ott, as in-change of an immigrant holding house. He has wrote and directed the award-winning short film 'Heroes'.[2]
Personal Life
Roberto can speak English and Spanish fluently. From his childhood, Roberto is a fan of comic books, Bruce Lee and basketball.
Roberto started dating dancer Lenee Adkins in 2016. They got engaged in March 2023. The couple married in June at a courthouse in Los Angeles.[3]
