Roberto M. Serrini (born July 14, 1977) is an Italian-American filmmaker and travel writer. He has directed multiple award-winning music videos for bands including The Cars, Soul Rebels, and Chris Sullivan (Joseph the Spouse) and has a prolific career as a commercial director[1] working with such global brands such as Nike, Adidas, Google, Apple Inc., and Honda. His filmmaking style has been compared to Quentin Tarantino[2] and has won him multiple awards in advertising including two Gold Cubes and a Silver Pencil,[3] along with having work in the permanent collection at the MoMA. He has won numerous film festivals for his documentary and narrative work including The Hollywood Film Festival, Jalopnik Film Festival, Aesthetica Short Film Festival, along with winning three Taste Awards for best documentary and travel series TravelClast. He was named one of the top New Directors in the 15th annual Shoot (advertising magazine)'s New Directors Showcase.[4]

Early life, education[edit]

Roberto Serrini was born in Queens, New York where he lived for most of his childhood before moving to Redondo Beach, California for high school. From an early age, he adopted a love for photography from his grandfather, and a love for travel[5] from his parents who both worked for Alitalia. He attended Brooks Institute briefly before transferring to University of California, Santa Barbara where he graduated with a degree in Film Theory with a minor in Journalism. After university Roberto moved to Los Angeles where he met Justin Jameson, the owner of the Australian-based travel publication Get Lost Magazine and started writing and making film content exclusively for them.

Film career[edit]

Early years[edit]

Serrini found great success doing a series of timed film contests right out of university. With very little resources he was able to win several including the 48 Hour Film Project, 24 hour film race, and 10 hour Cinemasports. His ability to work quickly and creatively would be a fundamental base to his success later as a commercial director and filmmaker. After a few years and a dozen films under his belt, he moved back to NYC and became an apprentice editor at jUMP with Dave Herman. He then moved to TheLab to work with the award-winning editor and Niel Gust (musician from Heatmiser) eventually becoming the Director of Motion Media for the company in 2015. Serrini was well known for his rhythmic and elaborate editing style, which became a foundation for his directorial approach in filmmaking.

Commercial Work[edit]

Serrini has been the creative force behind many global brands and has directed some of the world's top celebrities like LeBron James, Naomi Campbell, Cristiano Ronaldo, Patrick Kennedy, Maria Sharapova, Dita Von Teese, Chris Sullivan, and Kanye West. He relaunched the new line of Honda Gold Wing motorcycles with 5 award-winning short films in 2017, as well as contributing to the launch of the iPhone 7. His use of laser-sharp editing and seamless visual effects is a hallmark of Serrini's authorship.

Documentary Work[edit]

With a background in Journalism, Serrini has self-produced over 200 short subject documentaries to date.[6] He has won multiple awards[7] for his travel series TravelClast which features the best in culture, food, and lodging around the world. In 2020 during the pandemic, Serrini produced “Italy In Bocca”[8] a short subject documentary about rare Italian cookbooks that became an internet sensation. He used the film to raise donations[9] for food banks around the world,[10] with the help of multiple celebrity interviews. The film is currently being developed into a series for television with Cream Productions.

Television and Web Series[edit]

Serrini has created multiple successful series over the years on a variety of food and travel subjects. Make Me a Sandwich and the Brewhaha were both successful web series, and in 2018 sold a travel show called “High/Low” to Quibi which was to star the Foster Sisters.

Style and themes[edit]

Serrini grew up watching a mix of Classic American Cinema and classic Italian Neo-Realism which ultimately formed his unique style of storytelling. Both poignant and complex, he gravitates to emulate some of his all-time favorite auteurs like Fellini, Tarantino, Jean-Pierre Juenet, and Steven Soderbergh.

Personal life[edit]

Serrini lives in New York and Los Angeles, with occasional moments in Rome.
