Robin Boardman-Pattison (born 1997) is a British environmental activist and writer. He is best known as a co-founder of the climate movement Extinction Rebellion (XR) and Revolution in the 21st Century (Rev21), a network promoting democratic and nonviolent responses to ecological and social collapse.[1]
Early life and education
Boardman-Pattison attended Trinity School, Croydon, before studying Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Bristol. As a student, he helped organise the Fossil Free Bristol campaign, which in 2018 persuaded the university to announce full divestment of its £1.2 million investments from the fossil-fuel industry.[2]
Activism
Student and early campaigns
Before co-founding Extinction Rebellion, Boardman-Pattison was active in student climate networks associated with People & Planet and Rising Up!. In 2018, he joined a two-week hunger strike organised by the Vote No Heathrow campaign opposing expansion of Heathrow Airport.
Extinction Rebellion
Boardman-Pattison was a core organiser in the 2018 founding of Extinction Rebellion, helping coordinate early London actions and community structures. He later worked as a spokesperson and as part of the group’s Communities and Operations teams.
He took part in multiple London blockades and was involved in the Canning Town Tube disruption, a controversial protest that drew significant media criticism for targeting commuters. A leaked XR planning document naming potential Heathrow Airport blockades also drew attention in national newspapers.
Boardman-Pattison became known for his media appearances, including interviews on BBC, LBC, and Sky News. In 2019, Boardman-Pattison appeared in a BBC3 documentary on the theme of “Generation Activism”, which featured his two-week hunger strike with the Vote No Heathrow campaign.[3] During one televised appearance in 2019, he walked out of a live Sky News interview after accusing the broadcaster of trivialising the climate emergency, which generated widespread discussion across UK media outlets.[4]
He has been arrested around ten times for civil-resistance actions linked to climate protests, and is notable for such in Lockleaze, Bristol.[2]
Revolution in the 21st Century (Rev21)
Following his work with XR, Boardman-Pattison co-founded Revolution in the 21st Century (Rev21), a democratic-renewal project combining civil resistance, mutual aid, and citizens’ assemblies.[1] He also established Hard Rain Books, the publishing wing of Rev21, producing accessible writing on climate breakdown and social movements.
In 2025, he edited and wrote the foreword for 50 Articles the Media Wouldn’t Publish, a collection of essays by XR co-founder Roger Hallam, written while Hallam was imprisoned for 13 months.[5]
Views
Boardman-Pattison advocates for nonviolent revolution as a response to climate and ecological breakdown and the rise of the far-right, arguing that democratic assemblies and moral courage can replace the destructive logic of fossil fuels and mass consumption.[6] His writing frequently references traditions of civil resistance associated with Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
Public reaction and criticism
In 2019, following his outspoken support for Jeremy Corbyn against a "smear campaign" several outlets including the Daily Telegraph reported accusations of antisemitism.[7]
