Julien Vincent is an Australian climate activist and founder of the organization Market Forces, which works to combat climate change by targeting the financial institutions that fund the extraction and export of fossil fuels, particularly coal. Through a combination of direct action, research and analysis, and engagement with financial institutions, Vincent and Market Forces have pushed for commitments from the four largest banks in Australia to end funding for coal projects by 2030, as well as agreements from major insurance companies to cease underwriting new coal projects.[1][2][3]

Background[edit]

Vincent has a background in climatology and has worked with organizations such as Oxfam and Greenpeace. In 2013, he founded Market Forces with the goal of using financial pressure to combat climate change.[1] The organization uses a multi-faceted approach in its campaigns, including personal meetings with finance executives, data-driven presentations on the risks and costs of coal investment, and partnerships with advocacy groups such as 350.org, Greenpeace, and SEED to protest at bank headquarters. Vincent also engages with shareholders to push for the end of coal investments during annual shareholder meetings.[2]

Market Forces' campaign to defund coal[edit]

In 2016, Market Forces organized "divestment days" in which bank customers closed their accounts at pro-coal banks and opened new ones at institutions with policies to phase out coal financing.[1][4]

In 2017, the four largest banks in the country - Commonwealth, Westpac, ANZ, and NAB - all announced policies to phase out coal financing, with commitments to end funding for coal projects by 2030.[5] Major insurance companies in Australia have also agreed to cease underwriting new coal projects.[6][7][8]

Recognition[edit]

Vincent has received recognition for his efforts in the fight against climate change. In 2020, he was named as one of the "100 Most Influential People in Finance" by Financial Review. He was also awarded the 2022 Goldman Environmental Prize.[1][3]
