Rock Band VR is a 2017 Virtual Reality music video game developed by Harmonix and published by Oculus. Rock Band VR allows players to closely mimic the playing of lead guitar via the use of a Guitar shaped controller. Rock Band VR is the first installment in the Rock Band franchise to be played exclusively in Virtual Reality and was released for the Oculus Rift on March 23rd, 2017, and is the most recent entry in the series to date. The game is made to be played with a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One Rock Band 4 controller created by Mad Catz, however any guitar that is compatible with Rock Band 4 will work. The game comes with 60 licensed songs and has 21 downloadable content songs.[1] Rock Band VR was Harmonix's first time working with Virtual Reality and was created with the help of Oculus.
Rock Band VR was announced in 2015 by Oculus at The Game Awards and was to be released in 2016.[2] Instead of the traditional gameplay of other Rock Band games, Rock Band VR immerses you as a lead guitarist in the virtual band Audioblast. Rock Band VR encourages players to improvise by allowing them to play chords instead of just hitting specific notes like in other Rock Band titles.
Rock Band VR has almost no backwards compatibility to other games in the series, the only exception being hardware, as any guitar controller compatible with Rock Band 4 will work as long as you can connect it to your computer. Drum controllers and microphones do not work, as the game focuses on Guitar exclusively.
Rock Band VR was met with favorable reviews at launch with critics praising it for its enginuity and gameplay and was nominated for "Best Game audio Article, Publication or Broadcast" ("Steve Pardo: Creating Rock Band VR") and "Best VR Audio" at the 16th Game Audio Network Guild Awards. The game was criticized for being too confusing to new players and for lacking in some areas.[3]
Gameplay[edit]
The gameplay in Rock Band VR deviates significantly from other games in the series. In the Quickplay and Story modes, the player uses their guitar controller to make chords and strum to the beat instead of the traditional gameplay. The game portrays the player as the brand new lead guitarist for the band Audioblast. The band's singer, Derek, tells you to look backwards towards the drummer, Wes, to indicate that you are ready to start the set. When the song begins you must hold down specific buttons and strum to the beat to make different phrases. Phrases are sections of a song made up of different chords. The chords that the game will have you play are notes (any one button), power chords (1st and 3rd buttons), muted power chords (1st and 2nd buttons), bar/barre chords (1st, 2nd, and 3rd), muted arpeggios (1st, 2nd, and 4th buttons), arpeggios (1st, 3rd, and 4th buttons), and octaves (1st and 4th buttons). Songs are played through sections like verses, choruses, bridges, and solos. During solo sections, players can play any notes they want in any order to earn extra points. Some ways to play solos are tapping (Mr. Tapper) and hitting high notes (The Note You Know).[4] It is practically impossible to fail these modes. The Story Mode has the band playing gigs with pre-determined setlists. When you complete a gig you unlock the next in the list.
Players looking to play songs like in other entries of the series can play Classic Mode, which has players hit certain notes at specific times. Players earn points for successfully hitting notes and doing so without missing can get you a combo which can double, triple, or quadruple your score. Failure to hit notes will result in the player breaking their combo and doing this enough will end the song prematurely. During the song, some notes appear white, hitting these notes without missing fills your Overdrive meter. Once the meter is filled at least half way, the player can tilt their controllers upwards to activate "Overdrive" which will double your combo, making you able to earn up to eight times more points. Getting enough points will earn you stars over time, with 5 stars able to be achieved. One may earn gold stars by playing a song on Expert with a high enough score.
Post-release Content[edit]
Rock Band VR only recieved support through the rest of 2017, as there was not a big enough player-base to get updates to. No major updates have been released since the release of the game.
Development[edit]
In 2015, Oculus announced at The Game Awards that they were partnering with Harmonix to create a Rock Band Virtual Reality experience to be released in 2016. Harmonix began working on the game in October 2015. The game was to be solely focused on the guitar aspect of Rock Band games. The game was developed to be played with the Oculus Rift headet, and one of the Oculus Touch controllers strapped to the headstock of the guitar controller. These allow the player to see a first-person view of the stage and the guitar in your hand. At the 2016 Game Developers Conference, it was shown that the game was going to show the note tracks on the stage monitors which required the player to constantly look down, however Harmonix stated that they were finding different ways of providing the imput.

Main Soundtrack[edit]
Rock Band VR has 60 songs on download, spanning from the 1970's to the 2010's.
The sound quality in the game was achieved by Oculus' 3D Immersive Sound System, so the Drums, Vocals, and Bass get louder and quieter and you go closer or farther from the respective instrument.
