Rock Island Auction company (Logo)

Rock Island Auction Company (RIAC) is a gun auction house in Rock Island, Illinois, that deals in firearms, blades, and militaria. It was created by Patrick Hogan in 1993.[1] The auction house is an over 86,000 square-foot facility and hosts over eight auctions in a year. Most of the firearms in their auctions come from consignments.[2][3][4]

Auctions[edit]

1.1. Types of Auctions

Premiere Auctions

Premiere auctions contain valuable and rare guns that are generally sold as individual pieces.[5][6]

Regional Auctions

Regional auctions have less valuable guns compared to the Premiere auctions. They contain beginning collectors, hunting, and shooting firearms. Most of the guns are grouped into multi-guns lots.[5]

History[edit]

1886 Winchester Rifle

The Rock Island Auction Company sold an 1886 Winchester rifle that once belonged to a man who helped capture Apache leader Geronimo for $1.2 million at their 2016 April Premier Firearms Auction.[7] The gun was marked number 1. This firearm was carried by US Army Captain Henry Ware Lawton, whose team captured Apache leader Geronimo in 1886. It was sold to an anonymous buyer.[8][9][10][11]

Saddam Hussein’s Ruger M77

The Rock Island Auction Company sold Saddam’s Ruger M77 bolt-action rifle for $48,875.[12]

Adolf Hitler’s Walther

The Rock Island Auction Company sold Adolf Hitler’s Walther Model 9, a semiautomatic pistol with ivory grips, for $18,400.[13]

Winchester Rifle  [edit]

In April of 2016, RIAC set a world record for the most expensive single firearm, Winchester Rifle,  ever sold at auction, for $1,265,000.[5][14]

Colt Revolver[edit]

In April 2018, RIAC broke the world record for a single firearm sold at auction. The auction house sold a rare Colt revolver, known as “The Danish Sea Captain Walker,” for $1.84 million.[14][15]

It is believed that less than 100 were ever produced for the civilian market, and the one sold at Rock Island Auction Company in the Quad Cities is the only known Colt revolver in its original case.[16][17][18]

In the same year, RIAC also sold another “The Danish Sea Captain Walker,” Serial No. 1022, for $1.575 million.[19]

Anna Pottery[edit]

The Rock Island Auction Company sold a rare Anna Pottery Fair Jug honouring the Anna, Illinois Fair of 1884 for $86,250, making it the most expensive single piece of Anna Pottery ever sold at auction.[20]

The Rock Island Auction Company put up Nazi leader Hermann Göring’s gun, a Walther PPK, for sale. It had an estimated price of $250,000-$400,000.[21][22]

The rifle of designer John Garand was offered for sale by the Rock Island Auction Company during their September 2018 Premiere Firearms Auction. The rifle was estimated to bring between $225,000 - $375,000.[23][24]

In 2011, the company released a pilot for their show, 'Ready, Aim, Sold!' on Discovery Channel. The pilot was produced by Ciniflix.[25]

Publications[edit]

The Rock Island Auction Company has published one book called,  A Massive Firearms - Airgun Auction (ASIN: B003C6ZCPW).[26]
