Life and career[edit]

1990s and 2000s: Early life and family[edit]

Lynch was born and raised in Littleton, Colorado alongside his siblings Riker (born 1991), Rydel (born 1993), Ross (born 1995) and Ryland Lynch . Lynch is a second cousin of entertainers Derek Hough and Julianne Hough, their maternal grandmothers being sisters.[3][4] Lynch and his family moved to Los Angeles in 2007.[5]

In March 2010, R5 self-released an EP, Ready Set Rock and in April 2012, they signed with Hollywood Records.[6] Their second EP, Loud, was released on February 19, 2013, which featured the lead single and title track "Loud". The band's first full-length album, Louder, was released on September 24, 2013, and the album includes the four songs from Loud as well as seven new songs. The second single from the album, "Pass Me By", premiered on Radio Disney on August 16, 2013. The music video premiered on August 29 on Disney Channel and is available for public viewing on the band's Vevo channel. The third single, "(I Can't) Forget About You", was released on December 25, 2013, and reached number 47 on the Billboard Digital Pop Songs chart, and the fourth single "One Last Dance" was released on May 29, 2014. The third extended play, Heart Made Up on You, was released on July 22, 2014, and the self-titled single was released on August 1, 2014.[7]

On November 16, 2014, the band released the first single from second album, "Smile". "Let's Not Be Alone Tonight", the second single, was released on February 13, 2015.[22] "All Night" was released as the third single on June 2, 2015, along with the album's iTunes pre-order.[23] The band released their second full-length album on July 10, 2015, titled Sometime Last Night, and debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200, number 1 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums, number 3 on the Billboard Top Digital Albums, and number 4 on the Billboard Top Album Sales.[8]

On May 12, 2017, R5 released their fifth EP New Addictions.[9]

On February 1, 2018, R5 posted on their YouTube a video called The Last Show. On March 1, R5's Instagram and Twitter handles were changed to "the Driver Era" and all of R5's previous posts were deleted.[10] On March 2, it was reported that the Driver Era would be a band consisting only of Ross and Rocky.[11]

2018–present: The Driver Era[edit]

On March 1, 2018 R5's Instagram and Twitter handles were changed to The Driver Era and all of R5's previous posts were deleted. On March 2, 2018 Ross announced via Instagram story that The Driver Era would be a band consisting of him and his brother Rocky.[12] On the same day as their social media changes, previews of their debut single "Preacher Man" were posted on Twitter and Instagram.[13] The name 'The Driver Era' came from a conversation between Rocky and Ross during a car ride to a party, and the brothers agreed that this name encompassed where their music was headed.[14][15]

On March 16, 2018, they released "Preacher Man", along with its video a few weeks later. This single was met with high amounts of praise from the alternative/indie music scene. The video was based around a mixture of religions and sins. "Preacher Man" became the band's iconic song from the offing, the band having only released that song for a long period of time. The band also teased "Mary Jane", a song which was performed by Rocky but has never been released. This song was suspected to be their next single but that never came around.

On May 25, 2018, the Driver Era released two special remixes of "Preacher Man". On August 24, 2018, The Driver Era released a new single, "Afterglow", originally being released via YouTube before eventually being put onto Spotify. Along this period, the band also leaked their own song "My Silver Lining Is Overdue", a track which was due to be used in the film "Turnover" featuring band member and brother, Riker Lynch.

On October 26, 2018, The Driver Era released a new single, "Low ", followed by a special remix a few months later. "Low" was popular for being the band's first official single that was sung by guitarist and producer Rocky Lynch, as opposed to by being sung by vocalist Ross Lynch.

On March 29, 2019, The Driver Era released a new single, "Feel You Now", followed by its video a few weeks later. This came after the band teased multiple songs throughout a YouTube video titled "Haven't left the garage" including "Feel You now", "Welcome To The End Of Your Life", "San Francisco" and "Scared of Heights". Alongside those 4 songs was a unnamed song that is yet to be revealed.

On April 26, 2019, The Driver Era released a new single, "Welcome to the End of your Life", followed by its video a few weeks later. This was a song the band had teased multiple times throughout 2019 up until the point of release, revealing how it was a song that excited them during the production.

On June 13, 2019, The Driver Era released their new music video for "Low" & announced their debut album, titled "X".[16][17]

On June 28, 2019 The Driver Era released a 10-track titled "X" including the previous singles and a handful of new songs that had previously been performed on the tour.

On October 25, 2019 The Driver Era released two singles, "A Kiss" and "Forever Always".[18][19]

On April 2nd, 2020, The Driver Era released a new single, "OMG plz don't come around / flashdrive", the two debut singles from their upcoming second album, rumored to be released in the late summer, which would later be delayed primarily due to the Covid-19 pandemic putting strains on the band's 'creative juices'.

On April 23rd 2021, during a Youtube Live dedicated to MTV Friday Livestream's 1st birthday, The Driver Era announced their new single "Heaven Angel", to be released within the following four weeks. Weeks later, the band released "#1 Fan" and "Leave Me Feeling Confident" before finally announcing and then releasing "Girlfriend", their 2nd studio album as The Driver Era.Following by « Girlfriend WORLD TOUR 2021–2022» with dates in US,Asia,EU
